Anglesea Irish Society cancels 2020 Boots at the Beach due to pandemic
PRESS RELEASE Wildwood, NJ – As a direct result of the restrictions in response of the COVID-19 pandemic and for the safety of our festivalgoers, it gives us great sadness that we must CANCEL the 2020 Boots at the Beach Country Music Festival presently scheduled for Friday, September 18-20, 2020.The Executive Orders currently placed by Governor Murphy makes it impossible for us to plan for a festival that has seen attendance grow to over 30,000 over the course of the three-day weekend in 2019.We are sad to announce that we unfortunately must cancel this year’s Boots at the Beach Festival. We tried to hold out as long as possible in making this most difficult decision, but in all fairness to our musicians, vendors, sponsors, hotel partners and all of our wonderful fans, we wanted to give everyone as much notice as possible. There are many factors that we had to consider and everyone’s safety is obviously our number one priority.Anglesea Irish Society President Bill O’Connell stated, “With everything going on and with the ever-changing cancellations and rescheduling of events, county-wide, including the most recent cancellations of the Irish Fall Festival, we had no other choice than to cancel this year’s Boots […]

Wildwood to keep Rio Grande Avenue name
PRESS RELEASE Wildwood, NJ – Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron today announced that the Commissioners have decided to keep Rio Grande Avenue as its entrance name to the city.”After announcing last week that the street name was being changed to Beach Ball Boulevard, we have heard from a large number of residents expressing their views that we should keep it Rio Grande Avenue,” Byron said. The name change was first proposed by the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Authority (GWTIDA) in recognition and celebration of the new gateway into the city. Funded by the county and state, the new gateway focused on alleviating flooding and improving traffic flow. The project also included land and streetscape improvements, attractive lighting and other special features complimenting the city’s splendor and appeal.GWTIDA and the Commissioners looked at improvements as an opportunity to rebrand the gateway with a new name. After an extensive survey of over 5,000 responses predominantly reached with social media and advertised in local newspapers, Beach Ball Boulevard was the recommended choice.”Although we are sincerely grateful for all the work GWTIDA put into the process of the renaming initiative, too many of our constituents have voiced their objections to a new name for the entrance,” said Commissioner […]

Wildwood’s Friday Night Fireworks on hold
PRESS RELEASE Wildwood, NJ – Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron has postponed Friday Night Fireworks for the time being. “No one wants fireworks for our residents, visitors and businesses more than I do,” stated Byron. “However, we cannot make this decision in a vacuum.” Byron is referring to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s recent repeal to open indoor dining establishments and Covid-19 spikes in other states. “Unfortunately, many feel that social distancing and masks are arbitrary rather than lifesaving. If we are going to do this, we have to do it right – do it in a way that we can protect the most valuable part of Wildwood which is people.” “We simply cannot produce the fireworks in a way that can guarantee public safety, and until we can, it is our duty to examine further possibilities as well as the facts,” offered Commissioner of Public Safety, Steve Mikulski. Deputy Mayor, Krista Fitzsimons went on to say, “In Wildwood, we entertain and have done so for generations, but we always have to consider the impact to our residents, visitors and businesses when we approve any events, especially those taking place in the middle of a pandemic. “Yes, we want people to come […]

Along with City officials, the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority (GWTIDA) announced the completion of the all-new $13.7 million, Cape May County led gateway enhancement which commenced in February 2019. The project included road reconstruction, new streetscapes, and utility project stretches from 1,300 feet west of Susquehanna Avenue (near the existing eastern abutment joint of the George Redding Bridge) to Artic Avenue in the City of Wildwood. City of Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron noted that the extensive improvements that resulted in a brand-new corridor lent themselves to renaming the new gateway into the island. “No disrespect to Rio Grande, but we now have our own identity. The most photographed location on our island arguably is the Wildwoods sign and Beach […]

A Safety Message from Wildwood Police – July 4th Weekend
As we prepare to finally enter the beginning of our summer season, with the 4th of July Holiday weekend, and celebrate our Nation’s Independence, we wanted to take a moment to provide our residents and visitors with some additional information regarding planned enhancements to public safety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wildwood’s lifeblood – tourism – has been greatly and adversely impacted. This, coupled with the increased acceptance of social disorder across the Nation has challenged the “Family” environment we’ve come to love and enjoy every summer. Therefore, I have implemented several additional enforcement measures in an effort to enhance public safety within our community. The City of Wildwood Commissioners have recently relaxed the restrictions of our “Open Display” Ordinance. This was done in an effort to help our licensed liquor establishments by providing them the ability to permit the consumption of alcohol in the area immediately adjacent to their buildings. However, anyone found consuming alcoholic beverages separated from these establishments, will be found to be in violation of our Ordinance and a local ordinance summons will be issued. If you intend to partake in the consumption of alcoholic beverages at one of our many establishments, please do not drink and drive. […]

States and regions ahead of New Jersey in the business reopening process are experiencing surges of the coronavirus that are, in certain instances, exceeding the capacity of medical infrastructure. This has caused both pauses […]

PRESS RELEASE Wildwood, NJ – Looking to prevent a catastrophic summer season for local businesses and employees, Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron today appealed to the Governor to resume indoor dining as originally scheduled for Thursday, July 2nd at 25% capacity. “The Governor’s decision to postpone indoor dining cripples the recovery efforts of restaurants and will likely be a knockout punch for numerous local establishments. Being the most critical time for our short seasonal economy, I believe it is imperative to return to restricted indoor dining without any further delay,” Byron said. Commenting on Cape May County’s virus rate, Byron continued, “New Jersey has done a remarkable job flattening the curve and reducing COVID-19 cases. The state’s actions have been instrumental in seeing Cape May County with the lowest numbers in the state. “Cape May County is showing its responsible in combating the pandemic and local businesses are doing their share.” Byron expressed his confidence that businesses will apply the appropriate safeguards needed to allow limited indoor dining. “Local restaurants have had months preparing for a new approach to safely serve their customers with limited space, crowd control, masks and disinfectants. Fireworks launch site moved for social distancing purposes
It’s been anything but a slow news week in the Wildwoods, with re-opening date announcements for amusement and water parks, along with arcades, just in time for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend. Preceding these was confirmation that the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular and subsequent Friday Night Fireworks shows will be taking place, but from a new launch location. Since then, we’ve received a steady stream of questions from readers, asking why the fireworks shows are being moved from the longtime launch spot near Pine Avenue to the beach at Rio Grande Avenue, just south of the Wildwoods Convention Center. We reached out to Patrick Rosenello, Executive Director of the Boardwalk Special Improvement District (SID), and mayor of North Wildwood, for the official word. He explained that the new set-up is specifically intended to provide maximum social distancing opportunities. “I think it should be made very clear that the decision that was made was whether or not to move the fireworks location to Rio Grande Avenue or to cancel fireworks outright for the year,” Rosenello said. “There was not an option to hold the fireworks at Pine Avenue this year due to social distancing requirements. “Rio Grande […]

NJ travel advisory DOES NOT affect bordering states
This afternoon, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, along with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, issued a travel advisory requiring visitors arriving from states with high COVID-19 rates to quarantine for 14 days. Immediately, social media lit up with confusion and misinformation. To be clear, this travel advisory DOES NOT affect states bordering or in close proximity to New Jersey. So, visitors from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC, along with Ohio and Michigan, need not be concerned. Effective Thursday, June 25, the advisory applies to those traveling from Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, Utah and Texas. As noted by Governor Murphy and his constituents, these states currently have “a positive COVID-19 test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a 7-day rolling average” or have “a 10 percent higher positivity rate over a seven-day rolling average.”

A re-opening date for New Jersey’s amusement industry has finally been set. At his daily briefing this afternoon, Governor Phil Murphy announced that amusement parks and water parks can begin welcoming guests on Thursday, July 2. In terms of specific guidelines, Murphy noted that capacity at all parks will be limited to 50 percent to start, and that guests and employees will be required to wear masks. Additional safety protocols are still being finalized. Both Morey’s Piers and Splash Zone Water Park are expected to make announcements with regard to their respective opening plans and operating procedures soon; both have been unable to open this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In late May, with rumors swirling about how Morey’s Piers would approach an eventual re-opening, a representative informed Wildwood 365 that no permanent operations decisions had been made. Yesterday, Morey’s Piers issued a press release, announcing over 500 jobs available for the summer. There is still no official word from Trenton on when arcades will be allowed to open, though various sources tell us that an update could come as early as tomorrow.

His highest-profile location was Douglass Pavilion, across from Douglass Fudge at Wildwood Avenue, where his interactive performances drew big crowds nightly and earned him a cult-like following. In the past, Moonshine has a adapted to his surroundings, his energy-fueled shows featuring trap music (a sub-genre of hip hop) and sometimes even fire and lasers. The reports started coming in yesterday afternoon. Several readers noted that two flatbed tractor trailers had been seen in Wildwood, both carrying a double decker bus reminiscent of those from Walt Disney World.Reader Gale Mills Stone snapped the photos seen here, as these curiosities arrived at the base of the Boardwalk on Pine Avenue.Late last night, we learned that none other than Randy Senna was behind this intriguing development. “Mr. Fascination” has remained active on Facebook during the COVID-19 crisis, while his Retro Arcade at Boardwalk & Magnolia has been unable to open.In a lengthly post, Senna confirmed that he had, in fact, acquired two Double Decker Omni buses formerly in operation along Main Street USA. After detailing the process of their transportation north, he explained their presence.”Why are they here in Wildwood? And why are they here now?” he mused. “The answer comes from the current events we have been living with for the last three months: Coronavirus.”Senna, a former Disney World cast member, noted how the pandemic has shut down indoor and amusement activities, from his own arcade to the world’s most famous theme park. With this in mind, he is hoping to create “new outdoor activities” during […]

NJ BBQ Championship & Anglesea Blues Fest POSTPONED until 2021
The following update was posted on the official Facebook page of the NJ State BBQ Championship this morning, confirming that the event, originally scheduled for July 10-12 (along with the Anglesea Blues Festival) will not be taking place this year… Official Announcement It is with a heavy heart that we announce the postponement of the New Jersey State Barbeque Championship and Anglesea Blues Festival. The safety of our volunteers, vendors, competitors, musicians and attendees has always been our top concern. We have attempted, in the midst of a global pandemic, to navigate the logistics of producing a first-class event that thousands of people anticipate each year. Simply put, the current government restrictions, and the lack of any clear timeline as to when and to what extent those restrictions may be lifted over the next five weeks, makes it impossible to delay this decision any longer. Producing an event of our size requires the coordination and mobilization of numerous contractors, vendors, suppliers and volunteers. It is not, and cannot, be produced overnight. We have no doubt that many will be disappointed by the postponement of the event, while others may applaud it. No matter where you fall, rest assured that we […]

The campaign to “Save Wildwood Catholic” has succeeded! The good news was announced this afternoon by Notre Dame de la Mer Parish, which shared a recent letter from Camden Diocese Bishop Dennis Sullivan to Rev. Joseph Wallace, president of Wildwood Catholic High School. In the letter, Sullivan praised and outlined the “impressive efforts” made to support the Wildwood Catholic Academy initiative after the announced closings of Wildwood Catholic and Cape Trinity Catholic back in March. The newly-branded academy, now a Pre-K-12 institution, will open this fall and operate out of the current, longstanding school building at 1500 Central Avenue in North Wildwood. Sullivan further noted the substantial fundraising effort of the campaign – in excess of $1 million cash-in-hand – and struck a positive, hopeful tone with regard to the academy’s long-term success. “We are incredibly grateful to the families, friends and organizers of the Save Wildwood Catholic campaign,” said WCA administrator Kevin Quinn. “The organizers, the business and organizations, everyone who came together and contributed to this cause. “Because of your spirit and generosity, Wildwood Catholic Academy has become a reality and will open this coming school, allowing us to continue our mission of providing Catholic education to the children of this region.” More to come…

The food hall will consist of a variety of independent outlets housed in one and two-level containers, with additional food trucks and trailers. Morey’s intends to license the entire pier for alcoholic beverage service. Several examples of the food hall concept were cited in the proposal, including the Bowry Market in New York City, The Yard in San Francisco and the Detroit Shipping Co. Wildwood Crest to consider resolution urging governor to open pools
PRESS RELEASE WILDWOOD CREST – The Board of Commissioners of the Borough of Wildwood Crest is expected to consider a measure urging New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy to allow for the reopening of swimming pools in the borough. A resolution on the matter is expected to be on the agenda at the next meeting of the Wildwood Crest Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, June 3. Pools that are part of hotel and motel properties, condominiums and homeowner associations, campgrounds and municipal facilities have remained closed across the state despite guidance issued by the Center For Disease Control (CDC) that pool operators can take measures to promote healthy behaviors and maintain healthy environments and operations in aquatic facilities. Wildwood Crest mayor Don Cabrera said he has drafted and submitted guidance for public pool use to the governor’s office more than a month ago with no response. He does not believe pools should remain closed. “I see nothing in any executive or administrative order prohibiting pool use, so I don’t understand why pools must remain closed,” Cabrera said. “The state has allowed for county and local government to decide how to proceed on short-term rentals. Pool use is closely tied to short-term […]

Doo Wop Drive-In promises to be an “epic” addition to the Crest’s downtown vision
The grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony was not to be. There was no kick-off party, no balloons, no revelry; the spring car show street fair that would have tied into the festivities so perfectly was scuttled, as was the on-site wedding, the coffee with cops events and just about everything else on the planning board. After six months of intensively creative and physical work to bring his vision to life, Jason Kramer has had no choice but to adjust to the current reality. And remain patient. “No one could have seen this coming,” the lifelong Wildwood resident said of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, and its crippling repercussions for small businesses at the Jersey Shore. “But we will get through this. In the end, we will still be here and we’ll be ready. “In the immortal words of King Solomon: ‘This too shall pass.’” Working out the kinks Starting this weekend, Kramer’s sparkling, retro-fueled Doo Wop Drive-In will be open seven days a week, serving breakfast and lunch – but limited, of course, to takeout service for the time being. In addition to the disappointment of not being able to welcome guests into his new digs, the personable restaurantuer began working through […]

Pompeo’s to return, along with Little Nicky’s, this summer
Not one, but two beloved institutions will be reborn at 17th & Boardwalk in the weeks to come. Back in February, fans of Little Nicky’s Pizza rejoiced after new owner Elaina Galdo announced that the corner pizzeria was planning a reopening (with original recipes and new menu items), after sitting empty last summer. At the time, Galdo told us that there were no immediate plans for neighboring Pompeo’s Restaurant, which was available for lease after being closed for most of the past three years. Enter Rich Merlino. Earlier this week, Merlino confirmed to Wildwood 365 that he has taken over as the new owner of Pompeo’s and is actively planning its relaunch. He is aiming for a Fourth of July grand opening – contingent, of course, on current COVID-19 restrictions. The reopening will come with an expanded menu. The new Pompeo’s will continue serving up the “Best Breakfast on the Boardwalk,” along with lunch and dinner options. A definitive reopening date for Little Nicky’s has not yet been set. Morey’s Piers: “We are planning for several scenarios”
With New Jersey’s amusement industry in a holding pattern while waiting for directives from Governor Phil Murphy on when it can begin reopening, questions and confusion continue to mount. Yesterday, Morey’s Piers sent an email to guests who had previously booked cabana rentals at Ocean Oasis and Raging Waters water parks, informing of an updated refund policy. In the message, it was noted that the current plan calls for Ocean Oasis to remain closed this season, while Raging Waters would eventually open. The key phrase here is current plan. As of now, no permanent decisions as it relates to Summer 2020 operations have been made, Morey’s representative Maggie Warner confirmed. We reached out to Morey’s Piers to gain further clarification on this matter and received the following statement: “At this time, we are planning for several scenarios; the most likely is to have 2 piers and 1 water park open along with limited concessions, games, and restaurants. As it currently stands, the water park that would open first, when safe to do so, will be Raging Waters Water Park. “A recent email went out to guests that booked cabana rentals at both Ocean Oasis and Raging Waters Water Parks informing […]

While I understand and supported the Governor’s initial statewide stay-at-home order and closure of all non-essential retail businesses, it is time to reopen shore towns. “For the last three months people have adopted to the necessary safeguards that can allow us to appropriately function with more normal activities. While we certainly have to be steadfast in maintaining effective crowd behavior and other limitations, we need to act quickly to prevent an economic catastrophe to the Jersey Shore,” Byron said. The Mayor continued to emphasized the unprecedented fear and hardship local businesses are experiencing. Byron said, “Countless workers, small business owners, and their families depend exclusively on the twenty or so weeks of our seasonal economy. This short span of time cannot be further reduced without permanently crippling people’s year-round survival.” “I respectfully urge the Governor to relieve the pressing fears of workers and businesses by laying out […]

Memorial Day Weekend 2020 Overview
Back in late March, with the COVID-19 crisis in its early stages and still unfolding, we asked Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron about his prospects for the season ahead. “In my gut, I believe we will have a summer in the Wildwoods,” he said. “Can you imagine the opposite? I don’t want to. It’s going to take some creativity and lots of cooperation. “It’s going to be different, but I believe we’ll get there.” “Different” is a word we’ve heard a lot over the past few months, a byproduct of the changes and disruptions to everyday life caused by this pandemic. We are currently in Stage 1 of Governor Phil Murphy’s recovery plan. In a nutshell, this means that beaches, parks and recreation areas (including the Boardwalk) are open, while “non-essential” businesses can offer curbside pickup services only. With all of this in mind, the following is an overview of what to expect this most unique Memorial Day Weekend, as we forge ahead into – YES! – a new summer season in the Wildwoods… [NOTE: While it’s mentioned elsewhere in this overview, the mayors of the Wildwoods have asked us to remind our readers that social distancing orders from Governor Murphy […]

Doo Wop Drive-In set to open (for takeout) this Friday, May 22nd
The circumstances may not be ideal, but a date has been set for one of the island’s most anticipated debuts in recent memory. This Friday, May 22, the Doo Wop Drive-In will open for takeout and curbside pickup at 6200 New Jersey Avenue in Wildwood Crest. Breakfast and lunch will be served from 7 am to 2 pm daily, with hours increasing over the coming weeks. (Full menu available HERE; guests can place orders at 609-305-4807.) Owners Jason Kramer and Bryan Grant took over the former home of Tony Luke’s earlier this year, after operating the Doo Wop Coffee Shop at the Tangiers Motel since 2005. A dramatic, months-long transformation produced the desired result: a sleek, modern entity with the authentic feel of a 1950’s diner, inside and out. “The time had come for something bigger and better,” Kramer told Wildwood 365 back in March. “We found the perfect location and the perfect building, with parking, for everything we envisioned.” When the Doo Wop Drive-In is able to welcome dine-in guests, it will comfortably seat approximately 100 people – double the capacity of the Doo Wop Coffee Shop. The spacious dining and kitchen areas will allow for an expanded menu […]

Surfing Pig owner: Prepare for a challenging holiday weekend
In recent weeks, Bill Bumbernick, owner of the Surfing Pig, has taken to Facebook to share live updates during the COVID-19 crisis. From virtual walkthrough tours of the bayside restaurant to detailed explanations on how operations have changed (along with an expansion approval), the videos have been viewed by thousands and continue to spark constructive dialogue. In his latest update, Bumbernick urged the importance of patience, preparedness and a tempering of expectations, as this most unique Memorial Day Weekend approaches. “We’re excited to have everyone down here, but it’s going to be a challenge for you and for the restaurants,” he said, noting that the Surfing Pig and other local establishments saw record food requests this past weekend, while being limited to takeout and delivery services. “We need everybody on […]

Neighborhood service, tradition continue under new owners at Suncrest Market
Family owned and operated for nearly a half-century, Suncrest Market is in many ways the quintessential “corner store down-the shore.”With emphasis on community, service and value, the Thompson family welcomed generations of locals and vacationers to the corner of New Jersey & Preston, deep in the heart of Wildwood Crest. When the market opens for the new season, on Friday, May 22 (soft opening) it will do so under new ownership for the very first time, with the Vassallo-Jones family taking the reins. And so, the tradition continues… “The Vassallo-Jones family has a long history of being affiliated with the market as customers and friends of the Thompson family,” the new owners told Wildwood 365 in a collective statement. “Members of our family even worked there in the summers of their youth. “Much will remain the same at the Suncrest. Many of the employees are returning, including the most recent cook. Many of our vendors and menu items will remain the same as well, so customers can count on their favorite Italian hoagie or cheesesteak. But we are adding some upgrades as well.” Changes will include a new layout, “allowing for a more spacious shopping experience.” In addition, the Suncrest […]

Cheer up, spud: Curley’s Fries returns on Friday, May 22nd
Regrettably, we’ve been the bearer some pretty lousy news over the past few months. Believe us, we’d much rather be writing about roller coasters, boardwalk pizza, neon signs and… well, just about anything over this pandemic stuff. Amid the seemingly endless barrage of cancellations and restrictions, it’s important to look for some silver linings as we attempt to make the best of this situation. Undestandably overshadowed by yesterday’s news that Morey’s Piers would be unable to open for Memorial Day Weekend was the announcement that Curley’s Fries will make its season debut next Friday, May 22. That’s not good news, it’s GREAT news! Only the Surfside Pier location will be in operation for now – offering takeout, of course – but we’ll gladly take it. A world without those yummy cuts of potatoey goodness just ain’t right. With the rides and all arcades closed, and every business dealing with some level of restrictions (many, sadly, closed outright), we face many uncertainties in the weeks and months ahead. Yes, Memorial Day Weekend is going to be “different.” Yes, Summer 2020 in the Wildwoods is going to be “different.” But the gradual return of our favorites will go a long way toward […]

Wildwood historical museum debuts virtual 3D tour
When museums around the world were forced to shutter due to the COVID-19 crisis, many turned to technology to keep their would-be visitors engaged. An added bonus of the explosion of “virtual tours” has allowed “virtual guests” from, well, “virtually anywhere” to view collections they would otherwise have no access to. This morning, the George F. Boyer Museum, home to the Wildwoods Historical Society, announced the launch of a new 3D tour feature via Google Maps. Users can also type in the museum’s address (3907 Pacific Avenue) and click on the “360 view” option to access the high-definition tour. Guests are encouraged to interact with staff and ask questions about the many artifacts and curiosities on display, through social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) or email – wildwoodhistoricalsociety@hotmail.com. “The 3D tour was done a few weeks back by Bill Banks of 360YourSpace.com,” said Wildwood Historical Society President Taylor Henry. “He did it for us because he loves to visit and preserve historical sites. “We are thrilled that people can now ‘visit’ the museum 24/7/365 because we are considered a non-essential business and therefore not allowed to open yet. We hope the 3D tour makes people very happy!” The museum was set […]

Tram Cars to run after MDW, with new protocols in place
Slowly, but surely, we’re beginning to get a sense of what Summer 2020 in the Wildwoods is going to look like. Late last week, several restrictions on access to the Boardwalk and beaches were lifted, and more “essential” businesses opened for takeout and delivery services. The majority of Boardwalk shops remain in limbo, however, pending Governor Phil Murphy’s decision on when to allow retail stores, restaurant dining rooms, etc. to reopen. Another very noticeable absense has prompting the much-asked question: Will we hear “Watch the Tram Car, Please” on the Boardwalk this summer? The answer is YES, but details surrounding the implementation of new protocols for the famous Sightseer Tram Cars are still being finalized. “We are looking to restart the Tram Cars on Tuesday, May 26 with some common sense, innovative mitigation protocols in place,” said Patrick Rosenello, Executive Director of the Boardwalk SID, and also Mayor of North Wildwood. “These measures will preserve the authentic nature of the Tram Cars while also providing significantly-enhanced safety measures for customers and staff.” Perhaps the Wildwoods’ most iconic and enduring icon, the Sightseer trams celebrated their 71st summer of operation on the Boardwalk in 2019. Service generally begins in April or […]

NJ Jeep Invasion postponed until 2021
Another major event has been rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This afternoon, the NJ Jeep Invasion announced the decision to cancel this year’s event, originally scheduled for June 26-28. Next year’s date is already in place, as the event will be held July 9-11, 2021. The following message was posted on NJ Jeep Invasion’s official Facebook page…*************** Hello, fellow Jeepers, it is with great remorse that we make this announcement, which was not an easy choice for us. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the absence of any sense of what the rules will be moving forward; as well as for the safety of all of our participants, vendors and staff members, we feel it is in the best interest of everyone to postpone the 2020 NJ Jeep Invasion until July 9-11 of 2021. We know this is not the news anyone was looking for, nor the news we wanted to have to share. However, with the information we currently have, we feel it’s the best decision at this point in time. It is nearly impossible to plan an event of this size not knowing future social distancing guidelines and we did not want to delay making a decision […]

Wildwoods Boardwalk & Beaches Update and Weekend FAQs
In the 10+ years we have been running the Wildwood 365 blog and social media accounts, we had never received more questions over a 24-hour period than we did following the announcement of the reopening of the Boardwalk. After North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello put out the official word on Tuesday night, the emails and messages came, fast and furious. And, quite frankly, many of the queries mirrored our own curiosities and concerns. With the weekend almost upon us (and with Memorial Day Weekend looming a mere two weeks away), we reached out to local officials to gain clarity on matters pertaining not just to the Boardwalk, but the Wildwoods’ beaches and visiting the island. What follows is a question/answer format providing the most up-to-date information available. Two quick notes before we dive into things:As with so many aspects of our lives affected by the COVID-19 crisis, the topics discussed here are fluid in nature, and subject to change daily. Perhaps it should go without saying at this point, but every official we talked to stressed the continued importance of social distancing and “common sense” practices (including wearing a mask) when in public, and especially when near other people. The […]

PRESS RELEASE CAPE MAY COUNTY, NJ – A consensus-driven coalition of Cape May County Freeholders, Mayors and Business Community leaders today made a submission to Governor Phil Murphy entitled “A Proposal for the Safe, Thoughtful and Progressive Reopening of Cape May County During the Time of COVID-19.” The proposal details a potential path for reopening Cape May County that is focused on safety first. COVID Cases See a ‘Significant’ Decline at Southern Ocean Medical Center

Currently, today, as I sit here, we have 23 inpatient positive COVIDs, in house. Ship Bottom Beaches Reopen for Property Owners, Residents with Placards
(Photo by Ryan Morrill) Beginning at 6 p.m., April 24, Ship Bottom beaches are open to property owners and residents in possession of a disaster re-entry placard, officials announced late Friday afternoon. Surf fishing will be permitted on the beaches from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m., according to the emergency order, which rescinds a previous one closing beaches. Digital and reproduction of placards will not be accepted as proof of an official disaster re-entry pass, according to the emergency order. Beach buggy permits will not be issued under the measure signed by Mayor William Huelsenbeck and Joe Valyo, borough emergency management coordinator and a councilman in town. The re-entry passes were distributed following Superstorm Sandy, with an updated version, valid through 2025, mailed out to replace the expired ones earlier this year. The use of placards for access to beaches was implemented earlier this month in Beach Haven, Long Beach Township and Harvey Cedars. Barnegat Light and Surf City beaches remain open to everyone. Since Ship Bottom officials completely closed borough beaches April 4, the only Island town to do so, the number of COVID-19 cases in the borough has increased by only one and that case had nothing to do with virus exposure in Ship Bottom, Huelsenbeck said Friday […]

BCMF ticket holders can roll over their tickets to 2021, donate tickets to COVID-19 frontline workers, or request a refund at bcmfest.com. BCMF will donate 500 festival tickets to healthcare personnel on the frontline of the fight against CVOID-19. Organizers originally hoped to reschedule BCMF for later this year, but that became increasingly challenging due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. “Based on the outpouring of support from fans and the Wildwood community, we’ve worked tirelessly with artists’ management and the city since mid-March to find an alternate weekend for BCMF this year. During this process, the COVID-19 landscape changed yet again,” said Rob Pedlow of Barefoot Country Music Fest. “We’re heartbroken over what’s happening throughout the country and disappointed BCMF will not happen in […]

LBI Outdoor Dining Options Could Be More Plentiful This Summer
While having a meal on the beach isn’t part of Long Beach Township’s new executive order, the measure does aim to make it easier for township restaurants to offer outside dining. (Photo by Ryan Morrill) Long Beach Township restaurants will have more opportunities for outdoor dining at their establishments this summer under a new township ruling that seeks to further accommodate social distancing guidelines. All in-person dining restaurants, including those previously approved for outdoor seating, are eligible to create or expand their outdoor seating, under an executive order that becomes effective once Gov. Phil Murphy reopens restaurants for in-person dining. The order, which can be found on the township’s website, is subject to the terms of the state’s regulations. Under the measure, establishments that offer solely takeout food are not permitted to seek outdoor eating areas. Mayor Joseph Mancini said approval for the creation or expansion of outdoor dining will be done on a case-by-case basis, and social distancing must be taken into consideration when owners submit a “casual plan” to township officials. For approval to be granted, an outdoor seating plan must be approved by the mayor, police chief, construction office and the Long Beach Island Health Department. Temporary […]

Rio Grande Avenue reconstruction project on target for Memorial Day Weekend
The COVID-19 pandemic has not had any effect on the ongoing Rio Grande Avenue reconstruction project, according to Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron. Work continues steadily on the stretch of the island’s busiest entrance boulevard between the base of the George Redding Bridge and Park Boulevard, and remains on target for completion by Memorial Day Weekend. “Two-way traffic has resumed as we had the eastbound lane opened up,” said Byron. “So it’s really coming along. We haven’t had any stoppages of work since [Governor Phil Murphy] made a note for essential construction to proceed.” As outlined in a public letter back in February, the project was initially conceived as a means to improve flood mitigation and traffic flow, but the road improvements provided an opportunity to implement a brand new gateway. This will include a landscaped entrance lawn with a pump station “designed” in the shape of a Sightseer Tram Car, Doo Wop-style signage, and various, specifically-designed streetscape elements – and that’s just the beginning! The plan is to continue the aesthetic redesign all the way down to Ocean Avenue, essentially linking the Rio Grande Avenue from start (the George Redding Bridge) to terminus (the Wildwoods Sign at the Boardwalk). (Plans […]

Wildwood, North Wildwood mayors create “outdoor” initiative to assist dine-in establishments
Unprecedented times come with unprecedented challenges, often requiring creative, “outside the box” solutions. Teamwork, cohesion and communication are equally important. “In the situation we presently find ourselves in, with this pandemic, we are trying to be proactive, not reactive,” said Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron. “We have a long road ahead of us but we’re trying to stay ahead of the curve. “And when I say ‘we,’ I’m not just talking about Wildwood. I’m talking about the entire island, coming together as one big community, working together for the good of all.” Byron noted that he has been working particularly close with North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello, attempting to create a framework for recovery as businesses look toward a summer of great uncertainty. Recently, Governor Phil Murphy floated the idea of a ‘50 percent’ capacity’ mandate once eat-in establishments are allowed to reopen, with tables spread apart to continue the practice of social distancing. With this in mind, Byron said that he and Rosenello are working on introducing a resolution that would allow some bars and restaurants to “extend” onto other portions of their properties. “The idea is, if you have an establishment and you have adjacent parking lot, we will […]

“Essential” Boardwalk businesses now permitted to open, but for take-out only
As part of the update to COVID-19 restrictions announced by the municipalities of Wildwood and North Wildwood yesterday, Boardwalk businesses deemed “essential” are now permitted to open, but for take-out only. So, what does this mean? The bottom line is, you can only access the Boardwalk if you own or work at a store, or if you are going to pick up food. Officially, the Boardwalk remains CLOSED to the public at this time. That means, no walking, jogging, running, bike riding, gathering or sitting on benches for any reason, etc. Essential businesses – basically, those that serve food – can now open, but must serve customers at their front counters only. The public cannot enter these establishments, and must leave the Boardwalk after being served. Customers may enter the Boardwalk at the entrance ramp closest to the business they are patronizing. For example, customers of Sam’s Pizza Palace must use the 26th Avenue ramp that adjoins the establishment. It is highly recommended that orders be placed in advance of arrival for pickup. As lines will form when necessary, customers are reminded to practice proper social distancing measures (keep at least six feet apart from others at all times) and […]

Barnegat High School Swim Team Delivers for St. Francis Food Pantry
Three carts’ worth of food items were dropped off to the St. Francis Community Center’s food pantry on April 16, thanks to the efforts of the Barnegat High School swimming program. (Photo courtesy Emily Cherry) Emily Cherry is the kind of coach who’s always in touch with the athletes on her squad, even during the offseason. And several weeks back, when most of the Barnegat High School swimmers were expressing their desire to do something to benefit the community as everybody continued to battle the effects of COVID-19, she gave them an idea. “Because I work at St. Francis Community Center, I get all the messages about what’s going on there,” said Cherry, who during the summer coaches the St. Francis swim team. “Right at the beginning of the pandemic, I knew St. Francis had a lot of donations, but a couple of weeks later I was seeing a lot more notices about the need for donations. “I was talking to a lot of our swimmers, and they wanted to help in some way, so I suggested a food drive for St. Francis. They jumped on board pretty quick.” Cherry gave those who wanted to help two options – obtain […]

Marinas Cleared for Limited Operations
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont on Saturday, April 18, announced marinas, boatyards and marine manufacturers will be allowed to open for personal use as long as strict social distancing and sanitization protocols are followed. Chartered watercraft services or rentals will not be allowed, and restaurant activity at these sites must be limited to takeout or delivery only, like anywhere else in the three states, the governors’ message stated. The joint announcement was reported by the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce and distributed locally on social media by the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce. Some marina operators were looking to clarify the decision. Calls by The SandPaper to several Long Beach Island-region marinas that were open on Monday produced no replies to comment for the record this week. One said the directive seemed unclear as to specifics, and he had heard conflicting interpretations. Murphy announced April 13 that New Jersey was joining a multi-state task force organized by Cuomo to discuss policy on reopening commerce amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “We’ve committed to working with our regional partners throughout this crisis to align our policies when and where appropriate,” said […]

Proposed Hotel Apparently Hits Roadblock
Developer Christopher Vernon’s plan to build a 102-room hotel on the vacant site of Morrison’s Restaurant in Beach Haven appears to be on shaky ground, according to borough officials. Vernon has proposed a three-story structure. It would have a height limit of 44 feet to the top of the hotel roof, with an elevator tower not to exceed a maximum height of 45 feet, 9 inches. He has said the three-story design would enable the site to aintain the Ship’s Store building on the site, plus add gardens and other amenities. “I have been made aware that CAFRA (Coastal Area Facilities Review Act) is now prohibiting the location of the hotel, as proposed, on Second Street,” said Borough Manager Sherry Mason. “Mr. Vernon is meeting with CAFRA to determine what changes will need to be made to satisfy them. If they are substantial, he will have to come back to the borough council to amend his redevelopment plan as well as his redevelopment agreement. Then he would have to start with a fresh site plan with the land use board.” Mayor Nancy Taggart Davis said she had talked to Vernon a month ago, and he told her the state had issues with the Second Street location. She related that information to borough […]

Mayor Byron updates on recent Boardwalk damage, reconstruction plans
Recent damage to the Boardwalk, widely publicized through news reports and social media, wasn’t as bad as it may have looked, according to Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron. In addition, the affected section was not related to the area of the wooden way that collapsed late last summer, which was already in the process of being fully repaired. “The damage was significant, but not catastrophic by any means,” Byron explained, of a stretch of boards torn up by high winds on Monday, April 13, just south of the Wildwoods Convention Center. “Initially, we thought we might be looking at a couple million dollar fix, but we expect it will probably end up being somewhere around a $400,000 job.” Byron noted that the city is hopeful that insurance will cover the entire cost. (UPDATE: Governor Phil Murphy and state officials toured the damaged area with Mayor Byron on Tuesday. The Press of Atlantic City reports that Byron asked Murphy to look into additional state funding, and believes he is receptive to the idea.) “It’s going to be put back almost like a puzzle, using new wood. We’re looking at probably a four-week turnaround once we get started, which will be very soon.” Last August, […]

Community Rallies for Ship Bottom Surfer Fighting Cancer
(Photo by Jack Reynolds) Suddenly, Patrick Harrington’s bayside street in Ship Bottom was a parade of cars and cheers and music. Harrington’s parents had ushered him to the family’s front yard on a sunny day last week, where, to his surprise, friends, local police and first responders, lifeguards and others from the community drove past – as Mark Keeler’s MK Productions van provided good vibes tunes – to show their support for Harrington’s fight against Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “It was something I could have never imagined,” Harrington, who will turn 31 later this month, said of the lively parade of well-wishers. “I really want to thank everyone who organized the event,” including his friend Frank Ritacco, “and everyone who participated. “I can’t thank this community enough for all the support,” he added. “I can’t think of a better place to live.” Harrington, who moved from the mainland to the Island about a year-and-a-half ago, is an avid waterman; he surfed his way to the finals of the 2011 Jetty Clam Jam, an event he participated in nearly every year since its inception 14 years ago, and he’s a past member of the Ship Bottom Beach Patrol. Beach Haven Taxpayers Helping Out in Pandemic Crisis
The Beach Haven Taxpayers Association board has unanimously supported a program for Hackensack Meridian Health at Southern Ocean Medical Center to get food and donations to local heroes – the frontline doctors and nurses who are risking their lives to fight the COVID-19 virus. Board President John Hailperin said that working with the SOMC Foundation, the group is donating money to local Beach Haven restaurants for meal deliveries to healthcare workers at the medical center’s Emergency Department and the COVID-19 floor. He said the association will also ask its membership to consider making a personal contribution to SOMC. A COVID-19 SOMC link will be established on the BHTA website for that purpose. “The association will maintain a separate account to allow for tracking of all funds raised and distributed,” said Hailperin. “Funds and meals will be distributed and earmarked for the greatest area of need during the pandemic. The BHTA board also voted to support the Beach Haven First Aid Squad in its need for masks for its EMTs and drivers.” He said depending on the severity of the economic situation that has resulted from the virus, the association may consider future donations. “This should be a win-win-win for LBI and Beach Haven,” said Hailperin. “We are supporting our overburdened and at-risk medical community at their […]

Grocery Delivery for LBI Seniors a Vital Service That Keeps Giving
Olivia Lattanzi donating tip money to the St. Francis Food Pantry. (Photo by Kim Hogan) Last month, Long Beach Township gathered a group of volunteers and initiated a program to allow any Long Beach Island seniors 65 years of age and older, and individuals with compromised immunity, to place an order for groceries to be acquired at the local Acme and delivered to their doorstep. The service has been vital for many Island residents. And now, even more members of the community are benefiting from the program, as volunteer Olivia Lattanzi is donating tip money to the St. Francis Food Pantry in the form of Acme gift cards. Last week, Lattanzi – whose father, Joseph Lattanzi, a township commissioner, conceived the service – turned $500 in tips into $25 gift cards for the food bank, which has seen need surge during the COVID-19 pandemic. She plans to do the same with future tips. “They were really excited about the gift cards,” she said of the food bank. Olivia has been involved with the delivery program since its start, when, in that first week, she and her parents had about seven requests for grocery drop-offs. Numbers of requests have since multiplied, […]

Open letter to Wildwood Crest homeowners, visitors and business owners
The Board of Commissioners of the Borough of Wildwood Crest released the following open letter earlier this afternoon, regarding the COVID-19 crisis… We, the elected leaders of the Borough of Wildwood Crest, are charged with keeping our residents safe and informed during this extraordinary COVID-19 pandemic. The number of COVID-19 cases in Cape May County has risen to some of the highest rates of any county in New Jersey. Kevin Thomas, the director of the Cape May County Department of Health, has stated that the expects our county to be severely impacted by this crisis over the next few weeks. In response, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and other state officials have put in place a significant number of measures designed to limit social contact, including a stay-at-home order and the restriction of all non-essential travel. Here in Wildwood Crest, we have made the drastic decision to close all parks, the beachfront bicycle path and the beach in an effort to further encourage social distancing and to urge the public to remain at home as much as possible. These are decisions we do not take lightly. We understand fully that the beach and our recreational amenities are in many ways […]

Wildwood Beer Fest cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic
The ongoing coronavirus crisis has forced the cancellation of another popular event. The Wildwood Beer Festival, originally scheduled for Saturday, June 13, is now officially off. Organizers announced today that full refunds for pre-purchased tickets will be sent out shortly. This would have been the 6th annual version of the beer-tasting event and celebration of local craft brews, which has been held at Fox Park since 2015. “Safety for our family and yours is of our utmost concern, read a statement on the festival’s official Facebook page. “During these uncertain times, we want to wish everyone and their families our best wishes. Please stay safe.” “With understanding of these complicated times, ALL TICKETS that have been purchased will be refunded within the next 5-7 business days. “We will be back in 2021, better than ever! We look forward to seeing everyone in the brighter days ahead. “Cheers!” For more information, questions or concerns, email info@wildwoodbeerfest.com.

Officials Trying to Figure Out New Summer Norm for LBI
With all the debate about reopening America as the coronavirus curve flattens and heads downward, there are added considerations on LBI, which in normal times would be ramping up for a summer tourist season. “We have to have a contingency plan for when we reopen,” Ship Bottom Mayor William Huelsenbeck said late last week, “and one for if it (the reopening) doesn’t go as planned.” Summer preparation is nothing new for resort communities as the municipal workforce swells, with more police, public works employees and lifeguards. In pre-COVID-19 times, those appointments began a month ago with resolutions naming employees, their pay rates, start and termination dates. There has been some of that already, but planning for summer on Long Beach Island is a little different this year. “Human nature is going to dictate a lot,” Huelsenbeck said, like whether the bulk of restaurant business will be takeout, either curbside or delivery, or in-person, and even parking. “People may not want to dine in restaurants.” He said officials need to be prepared for what the new summer norm on LBI is going to look like, at least to the best of their ability. Huelsenbeck said he has spoken with other Island […]

COVID-19 Testing Site Remains at Ocean County College
Coronavirus testing for Ocean County residents will remain at the Toms River campus of Ocean County College after all. The final walk-through of the Ocean County Fire and First Aid Academy as the new site for COVID-19 testing revealed logistical issues that would prohibit its use, county health officials announced Friday afternoon. “While the Training Center provided an inside venue, following this review, these logistical issues cannot be addressed in time for the end of this emergency declaration,” Daniel Regenye, public health coordinator for the county health department, said. The OCC site opened March 30 to prequalified and preregistered county residents, and nearly 2,000 people have been tested there. Just under 30 percent have been confirmed positive after receiving their results, county health officials said Thursday. “The college operations have gone smoothly, the traffic flow is good, and we are doing well there,” Regenye said. The testing requirements have not changed, and anyone scheduled for testing should continue to self-isolate afterward, he said. “If you have symptoms, you should return home immediately and continue self-quarantining,” he said. “If you have the coronavirus you will be spreading it, if you are not isolating.” Test appointments will continue to be held on […]

Wildwood Catholic and Cape Trinity to close permanently
Very sad news to report today, per the Diocese of Camden: Several schools in the diocese will close for good at the end of the current school year, including Wildwood Catholic High School and Cape Trinity Catholic School. Father Joseph Wallace, pastor of Norte Dame de la Mer Parish, elaborated in a letter to his community… *************** Dear Wildwood Catholic and Cape Trinity Catholic School families: This letter is perhaps one of the most difficult letters for us to write to you. We know you are all aware how hard we have all been working together to combine our two schools into Wildwood Catholic Academy. The fruit of that work produced a plan and a budget that, while with some further work needed, produced an acceptable budget to give it our best effort for the next academic year. These plans and hopes, unfortunately, have been scuttled due to the devastating realities of the coronavirus pandemic. Our already tenuous enrollment estimations have diminished, our abundantly hopeful fund-raising expectations look rather bleak, and our growing debt unsurmountable. In conversation with the Diocese of Camden and the Office of Catholic Schools we have come to the mutual conclusion that our beloved schools will […]

Barnegat Doctor Pushes for Antibody Tests, Convalescent Serum for COVID-19
Dr. Melinda Boye administers an antibody test at her Barnegat office. (Supplied photo). In a month’s time, COVID-19 has swept the state with 75,317 confirmed cases as of April 16. While there is still much unknown about the rapidly spreading, difficult-to-detect virus, which manifests in an endless variety of symptoms ranging from zero to fatal, medical experts are revisiting containment methods dating back to the 1800s – antibody research and the application of convalescent serum. Professionals are beginning to theorize that once people have contracted COVID-19, they cannot get it again, at least not for some time. The even better news is, a fully recovered patient has antibodies that can be given to current patients which could potentially help them fight off the virus. Melinda Boye, a doctor of osteopathic medicine at Better at Home Medical Care Services in Barnegat, is pushing to bring coronavirus immunity to Southern Ocean County. According to Boye, much of the lack of understanding about COVID-19 has to do with insufficient tests, which often yield inaccurate results. The current, widely used COVID-19 test kit only shows positive for the first week of symptoms. Therefore, the swabs of people who go to the doctor short of […]

Maintaining the Comfort of Home at the Shore
Home maintenance services are here for clients throughout an emergency, and home improvement is still a dream reachable for the season when the clouds of coronavirus have passed. Below is a sampling of Southern Ocean County contractors who are reaching out to the community with availability, many through modified, safe-distancing means, to work the shore through this period. Consult the rest of these Homefront pages for more. Casey’s Cleaning “Gov. Murphy has declared cleaning businesses overwhelmingly essential, in his words,” said Cindy Nacca, owner of Casey’s Cleaning, which serves Southern Ocean County from a Forked River base. She answered the phone on a Saturday evening when HomeFront reached her to talk about commerce right now in these trying times. It varied by demographics. But some families who needed cleaning help were calling because of full houses more used than usual, with schools closed and adults working from home. They have gotten peace of mind from knowing their house was clean. “With our senior base, we’re not doing as well as we’d like to because of the fear factor,” Nacca said. The first Monday after the governor’s office declared social distancing a must, 55 seniors called to cancel. But there were […]

Arlington Pop-Up Market: Craft Cocktails To-Go With Makings of a Meal
(Supplied Photo) Good food and drink is even more a highlight of the day when so many of life’s pleasures are postponed now by social distancing mandates until the pandemic subsides. There is much anticipation for the return of restaurants to the sit-down indulgence that makes LBI the resort that it is. But The Arlington restaurant/bar in Ship Bottom came up with an idea that brings some of the excitement of its menu to making meals at home. The Arlington Market Pop-Up is a contactless grocery option for locals as a way to get fresh produce, dairy, meat, beer, liquor and wine while avoiding supermarkets and other more heavily trafficked places, owners describe. The current pivot to provide a food and beverage marketplace for preparing updated American fare at home has been met with appreciation. While customers can look forward to the day when they’re sitting down to swordfish and mesclun greens or a filet mignon with asparagus in The Arlington dining room, they now know that the same ingredients to many meals can be easily picked up to create tasty meals at home. Crafted drinks are no exception, a plus of this market, since the well-stocked Arlington taproom is here. […]

Less than 30 Percent of COVID-19 Tests Positive in Ocean County
Ocean County Fire and First Aid Training Center (Courtesy of Ocean County) Just under 30 percent of Ocean County residents who were tested for the coronavirus in the past two weeks were confirmed positive after receiving their results, according to county health officials. The testing facility opened March 30 at Ocean County College. Roughly 1,955 tests were performed, and 1,574 results have come back, county health officials said Thursday afternoon. Test appointments are available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for those who prequalify and are preregistered. Beginning Monday, April 21, the drive-through COVID-19 testing site for Ocean County will move from Toms River to the Ocean County Fire and First Aid Training Center in Toms River. Ocean County Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy, who is also county emergency management coordinator, said the move provides “a more secure structure that will be more helpful to the hospital workers and other staff that will be administering the test.” He said the new testing site also has an indoor drive-through area so testing days are not predicated on weather conditions, which resulted in the postponement of scheduled appointments on April 13 and did damage to some tents used for the facility. “This new site […]

Seventh Annual HopSauce Festival Canceled
Organizers have reluctantly pulled the plug on the seventh annual HopSauce Festival in Beach Haven on May 30 due to public health concerns. Jetty and Spice It Up, the two businesses responsible for creating and running the festival that celebrates craft beer, hot sauces and original music, have announced the event will have to be postponed to June 2021. “We really did not want to cancel the event. We love everything about our festival. We put our heart and soul into it every year, and we always work year-round to make the next one better than the last,” said Regina Lotito-Starin, owner of Spice it Up. The festival has produced over $134,000 in charitable donations, all of which have been doled out by Jetty’s nonprofit arm, the Jetty Rock Foundation. “Most people don’t realize it’s a fundraiser, but that’s why we created it in the first place, to raise money for our Foundation post-Sandy and to bolster tourism during the traditional slump after Memorial Day weekend,” said Jeremy DeFilippis, Jetty CEO. Donations have flowed to many initiatives, including technology for schools, the Oyster Recycling Program and the borough of Beach Haven. The Jetty Pavilion stands on the west end of […]

Portofino Restaurant Helps Feed Community in Little Egg Harbor – ‘No Questions Asked’
LOOK TO THE RAINBOW: Dina and Mike Iovine outside their restaurant at 800 Radio Road. The owners of Portofino Pizza and Italian Restaurant in Mystic Island are busier than ever during the coronavirus crisis, responding to the food needs of their community. When the Little Egg Harbor Food Pantry closed, the Iovine family, Mike and Dina, decided they would open their own food pantry. With help from outside donations, they are making emergency food packages available and also delivering pizzas and dinners to those in need. They recently posted on their Facebook page: MANGIA: Donations of meals and pizza for families in need are prepared by Mike Iovine and Amanda McCallister. “Hello Little Egg Harbor Community members. As you may know, we recently reached out to offer free dinners to families that were facing serious hardships. The response has been overwhelming. There are so many more families who need assistance in our town than you could possibly imagine. We would like to share our offer at this difficult time – as we have seen the need and have already been helping as much as we can. “If you or anyone else are having a hard time and need a meal […]

Murphy Announces Schools Will Remain Closed Through at Least May 15
Southern Regional High School and all public schools throughout New Jersey will remain closed due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19 through at least May 15, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Thursday. (File Photo by Ryan Morrill) New Jersey schools will remain closed through at least Friday, May 15, Gov. Phil Murphy announced today. “I’ve made this decision in careful consultation with Judy (Persichilli) and the Department of Health as well as Dr. Repollet with the Department of Education, among other key stakeholders.” Given the continued spread of COVID-19 and its corresponding and still rising death toll, the announcement likely was not a surprise to school superintendents across the state but nonetheless fuels the heartbreak of many students, particularly high school seniors. Murphy said he understood the angst. “There is nobody who wants to open the schools more than I do,” he said. “I’m a father of four kids, one of whom is in high school, and I want him to return to his regular classrooms, but I can’t do that right now. But I remain hopeful we can. We cannot be guided by emotion. We need to be guided by where the facts on the ground, science and public health […]

New Government Partnership Offers Ocean County Seniors Food Shopping Services
Ocean County’s elderly residents are being provided a helping hand with their food shopping needs through a partnership of state, county, municipal and community organizations that have come together to assist. “This partnership will allow our seniors to have their food shopping needs met with one phone call without having to leave the safety of your home,” said Ocean County Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari, chairman of the Ocean County Office of Senior Services. To access the service, Ocean County seniors can call the Ocean County Office of Senior Services at 732-929-2091 or the Long Beach Island Senior Center and Outreach at 609-978-6220. The program is open to all residents of Ocean County age 60 and older. Food-shopping services will be administered by Jersey Cares, the state Department of Human Services, Division on Aging Services, and St. Francis Senior Center and Outreach on Long Beach Island in conjunction with the county. “Unfortunately our seniors are some of the most vulnerable when it comes to exposure to the coronavirus,” said Vicari. “As this pandemic moves into weeks, our seniors are fearful of heading to supermarkets. While many major food stores have set aside hours for our seniors to shop, panic shopping has left many store […]

Cranberry Industry Threat Continues
For the inland residents of the Jersey Shore, the cranberry was as important to their livelihood as clams, oysters and tourists were to their coastal counterparts. This industry was dealt a nearly fatal blow when on Nov. 9, 1959, Arthur S. Flemming the U.S. secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, told Americans not to buy cranberries because a shipment from the Pacific Northwest had been found to contain a pesticide that had caused cancer in laboratory rats. While many attacked Flemming for condemning an entire industry for the problems of a few, others began to question the science behind the condemnation. On Nov. 12, the Associated Press reported to the nation the government “hopes to clear uncontaminated cranberries of suspicion in plenty of time for Thanksgiving Day dinners. Expanded forces from the Food and Drug Administration also were checking the berries. The Army and Navy suspended use of cranberries grown in Washington and Oregon, but will permit use of those it can prove grew elsewhere. … One government official said the government is ‘morally obligated for damage to the innocent,’ but added that ‘just what the government will do, I cannot say at this time.’ That comment came from Asst. […]

Seafood Snapped Up Locally for Holiday, But Scaled-Back Restaurants Still Hurt
Tightened metropolitan restaurants weren’t buying the normal volumes of seafood on what should have been one of the biggest weekends for Viking Village dock demand, Good Friday through Easter. But locals rallied with their own support, lining up to buy fish that was literally fresh off the boat. On April 5, Lighthouse Marina had offered on Facebook that anyone could order and pick up tilefish for Wednesday, April 8, at the Sixth Street dock in Barnegat Light, as soon as the Frances Anne got back in from offshore with the catch. (A few years back, the boat had been filmed in the reality TV show “Swords on the Line.”) On that Wednesday, two days before families’ Good Friday fish dinner, a line of cars and pickup trucks stretched down the road in response. The service was drive-through, and the fish were purchased whole. “We were so humbled to see that so many people were missing fresh seafood, and how happy and appreciative they were to get it,” said Beth Mears Schofield, from the marina. “It was from the ocean, to the boat and into their car! We know that everyone who got a fish enjoyed it, and that makes the […]

Hodgson: Consequences to COVID-19 Response Shouldn’t Divide LBI Area
While officials in most Long Beach Island communities have taken precautionary action to limit exposure of COVID-19 in the resort area, Surf City’s governing body has been relatively quiet about implementing any restrictions. Until now. “You have to consider everything,” Mayor Francis Hodgson said prior to the borough council’s April 8 meeting, held remotely. “There are so many repercussions from this.” It was the first time the council met since COVID-19 protocols were put into place by Gov. Phil Murphy in March, calling for the closure of schools and nonessential businesses across the state. The governor’s initial executive order called for social distancing when in public spaces, meaning people should remain 6 feet apart from each other at all times, and a limit to social gatherings to no more than 50 people. All of it was in accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding the novel coronavirus. In March alone, the governor issued several follow-up edicts including a nightly curfew, travel restrictions and a request urging non-primary homeowners to stay away from Jersey Shore communities during the pandemic. The influx of seasonal homeowners was such in late March that officials in Barnegat Light, Beach Haven, […]

How to Fit in With the Locals If You’re Second-Home Quarantining, Plus Surf and Beach Closure Ethics in Time of Crisis
Gloves are in short supply? But they’re just lying around everywhere. (Photo by Jon Coen) I don’t know why everyone is making such a big deal about a shortage of gloves. As far as I can see, they are all over. Just go grab a pair off the street, out of the parking lot or off the beach. I mean, there are literally plastic gloves everywhere. Well, here we are, some five weeks since the World Health Organization declared CODIV-19 a global pandemic. I had heard we were supposed to make America Great Again by Easter, but I guess that didn’t happen. And yet, there are the first signs of hope. With any luck, they didn’t get blown out to sea with the brutal west winds all weekend. Before we get into the ins and outs of quarantine-a-palooza, I do have some advice for all of LBI and Beach Haven West’s “new” year-round residents who have decided to ride this thing out at the beach. Now, I’m not going to make this into another locals vs. second-home owners thing. The governor already told us this is no time for a beach party. I think we’ve had enough of the vitriol […]

Have Another Hit … of Sweet Air; Guv Taking Flak Over Parks Ban
BUSTED: New Jersey conservation police officers, working in masked COVID mode, made a major bust on March 30, near Atlantic City. After a night of tracking two boat fishermen acting suspiciously – speeding between various fishing locations without using navigation lights – the officers stopped and inspected the vessel. It was loaded with 66 illegal bass, between 13 and 24 inches. Charges were leveled, which could amount to well over $25,000 in fines. (Photo Courtesy N.J. Division of Fish and Wildlife) So, are we having fun yet … you buncha shaggy dogs? Hey, I have no room to talk. My mane, never a thing of beauty to begin with, looks like something even the cat wouldn’t drag in. Can you imagine the claw-and-fang rush that will take place when beauty parlors reopen? And that’s just the men! Downright Neanderthal. By the by, I was being a wee bit serious with that “having fun yet” remark. There is nothing in the latest printing of the Quarantine Bible that says isolation participants must mandatorily be sullen, if not self-floggingly miserable. Obviously, we all should take some time to pay respect to those suffering from COVID-19. That respect paid, too much solemnness, especially […]

Mighty Gusts Blew Through Area Monday
Wind blew over an outdoor sculpture at MT Burton Gallery in Surf City. (Photo by Ryan Morrill) Turbulent weather brought some unusually high wind gusts through the area, according to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly. Nick Carr, staff meteorologist, said the highest guests were recorded around noon Monday with 82 miles per hour at Island Beach State Park. Across Barnegat Inlet, a gust of 81 mph was recorded at Barnegat Light. On the south end of Long Beach Island, a peak gust of 74 mph was recorded at Beach Haven. (Photo by Ryan Morrill) “There were some in the upper 60s at Ship Bottom and Mystic Islands” (Little Egg Harbor mainland), said Carr. He said the gusts, which came following several hours of on and off rain, were caused by a gravity wave. This is when stronger winds in the upper atmosphere drop to lower levels during periods of weather instability. “We don’t usually get gusts like that around here, even during nor’easters,” he noted. Late in the afternoon, strong winds returned when a line of thunderstorms rolled through. “There were some gusts around 50 or 55, which isn’t too unusual when you have severe storms,” he said. “But they cleared up […]

Old Barnegat EOC Building on the Market
(Photo by Ryan Morrill) The Barnegat Township Committee has put the former emergency operations center building on East Bay Avenue on the market. The sale price, initially $125,000, was lowered to $50,000 due to what committee members said was the building’s poor condition and no takers. The committee adopted a resolution on the matter at last week’s committee meeting. But prior to the vote, former Mayor William Neyenhouse said he had “serious concerns” about the resolution appearing on the consent agenda, which he said is for routine matters. “I feel that it’s unethical to list this important resolution on the consent agenda as it certainly is not routine,” he said. “Selling a 90-year-old structure that’s significant to the Barnegat Historic District should have required an open discussion with the various groups involved with the district such as the Barnegat Historic Preservation Commission and the Barnegat Historical Society.” Neyenhouse’s comments were not made during the normal public session. Rather, his remarks were read aloud by the township clerk who had requested that any resident who wanted to air any concerns should email her prior to the meeting since there would be no audience. Committee members and professional staff were in the […]

Girl Scouts Send a Sweet Thank-You to SOMC Staff
As many New Jersey residents take shelter in the safety of their homes to protect their families from the relentless outbreak of COVID-19, dedicated healthcare workers continue to soldier on tirelessly. Girl Scout Daisy Troop 50039, having had its cookie season cut short by the pandemic, decided to remotely funnel their efforts into a kind gesture for the hard-working staff […]

Hand’s Garden Center in Little Egg Harbor Has New Owners
GROW WITH US: Brothers-in-law Mike Carey and C.J. Davies have reopened Hand’s Garden Center in Little Egg Harbor. (Photos by Pat Johnson) Partners C.J. Davies and his brother-in-law Mike Carey took over Hand’s Garden Center in Little Egg Harbor in February and, despite a rough start thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, have managed to have a great Easter and early-spring season. “It’s already surpassing our expectations,” said Davies. Garden centers selling vegetable plants are considered essential businesses, and in these dark days of social distancing and isolation at home, gardening has become a delightful break in routine for many in the Little Egg Harbor/Tuckerton area. Hand’s Garden Center has an amazing array of plant material, thanks to Carey’s landscaping knowledge. “I worked for 13 years with a local landscape and garden center with over 400 clients on LBI and the mainland, and I wanted to start my own business.” Davies’ strength is in marketing, customer service and sales. “With Mike’s expertise in plants, we make a good team.” PLANT ME: Shade-loving columbine is in bloom. Both are thrilled with the location on Route 9 and the 3½ acres of space. Hand’s Garden Center also came with a large, dedicated clientele, […]

LBI Wedding Road Show & Party Planning Tour Goes Online for 2020
(File Photo by Jack Reynolds) Save the date! The 12th Annual LBI Wedding Road Show & Party Planning Tour, showcasing the greater Long Beach Island area’s venues and professionals, is scheduled for Sunday, April 26. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce is taking its award-winning destination marketing event online. “COVID-19 has brought us into uncharted territory in every aspect of life,” said Lori Pepenella, chief executive officer for the chamber. “The response is to evolve to the next level of service and bring the Long Beach Island region businesses to the guests that could not come here.” The Wedding Road Show will be hosted online, at no cost, from 10 a.m. to noon on the 26th. Go to visitlbiregion.com/lbi-region-events/wedding-road-show to register. The chamber has spent the past several months developing its five-year strategic plan, which includes consumer connection and enhanced access to local businesses. As the chamber explains, the 2020 Wedding Road Show & Party Planning event will not only showcase members who registered to be part of the event, but help people get more familiar with the area. “Typically, the day of the Wedding Road Show brings together hundreds of out-of-state attendees, […]

2020 Lighthouse International Film Festival Could Be COVID-19 Victim
(File Photo by Ryan Morrill) The Lighthouse International Film Festival is still up in the air about this year’s festival taking place as scheduled. “The Lighthouse International Film Festival has received questions about whether the novel coronavirus, which has devastated LBI as it has the world over, would require us to postpone or cancel the film festival, currently scheduled to take place June 4-7, 2020,” wrote the LIFF Board of Directors on Tuesday morning. “The answer is that we think it is too early to decide, and we intend to make a decision on approximately May 1 whether we need to postpone the festival from its original dates. “Like everyone in our community, our first concern needs to be ensuring the health and safety of our festival attendees, and we will make all decisions with that in mind, working with public officials on LBI and in the state of N.J. “We also recognize our responsibility to LBI and remain committed to remaining a vibrant part of LBI and its community. Should further evaluation dictate that we need to make a date change, we have every intention of postponing the festival to later this year, not canceling it. If we do need […]

‘Why Our Class?’ Senior Describes Heartbreak
Southern Regional seniors joyously toss their caps during graduation in pre-COVID-19 times. (File Photo by Ryan Morrill) This was our time to shine bright like the sun, The moments teachers said would be the most fun. Visiting Mickey, skipping school, and cleaning the beach All seemed way too far out of reach. The first quarter settled, the second flew by, The third then came with a major surprise. But not the kind with candles and cake, Rather, one that started a frenzy, And made our hearts break. At first it seemed like a storm that would pass. Little did we know, it would start our online class. I’ve spent many moments at home thinking and crying; Can you blame me for being upset that to Disney World we are not flying? Instead of a plane, what is up in the air Is our unknown future and feelings of despair. What happens to our prom? The “night we’ll never forget.” I sit at home and start to regret That I did not treat my last days as the end. But how could I know I’d be saying goodbye to my friends? Of course we are grateful for the memories […]

Frank Molinaro Lands Assistant Coaching Role With Arizona State Wrestling Program
Former Southern Regional and Penn State wrestling star Frank Molinaro last week landed a role as an assistant with Arizona State University. (Supplied photo) It didn’t long for Frank Molinaro to find a new home as a wrestling coach. “Tempe, Ariz., is a beautiful place to live,” said the former Olympian from Barnegat. “You have the mountains nearby, palm trees all over the place, and it’s really hot in the summer. I love it.” Just nine days after announcing his retirement from the sport, culminating a tremendous career that took him as far as fifth in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, the former Southern Regional and Penn State star was hired by Arizona State University, where he will be an assistant to Zeke Jones, himself a 1992 Olympic silver medalist and former U.S. Olympic team coach. “Frank is an outstanding addition to our staff and will now leave his mark by adding to the history and tradition of Sun Devil Wrestling,” Jones said in a statement released by ASU on April 9. “As an NCAA, Pan Am and World Cup Champion, and one who also represented his country on the 2016 US Olympic team, he has competed at the […]

Southern Regional High School Seniors Get a Sweet Surprise for Easter Sunday
Some of the Southern Regional High School crew gather, social distancing style, prior to delivering signs to the homes of some 450 members of the senior class on April 11. (Photo by David Biggy) Southern Regional Class of 2020 President Hayley Whitney is usually on top of the latest news relating to the senior class. Not on April 11. “Typically, I’m in the loop about things, but I was completely caught by surprise Saturday night,” said Hayley, who lives in the Ocean Acres section of Stafford Township. “I had received a bunch of text messages asking me, ‘Who did the signs?’ and I kept responding, ‘What are you talking about?’ So, when I finally looked outside my front door, I managed to get a glimpse of the back of somebody’s head as they left.” When Hayley went outside to inspect what the masked mystery person left behind, she was as shocked as the classmates who had started texting her non-stop. A simple, golden sign, staked in her yard, read: “We love our seniors; Class of 2020; Southern Regional Rams.” The high school has been shuttered to everybody but essential personnel, and the seniors haven’t been in the building since March […]

Wildwood Police report on storm damage from April 13, 2020
PRESS RELEASE On Monday, April 13, 2020, the City of Wildwood experienced a high wind weather event. This event caused numerous issues throughout the City. This included power outages, property damage, and damage to a few blocks of the south end of the Wildwood Boardwalk. This boardwalk damage was specifically located between Andrews Avenue and Rio Grande Avenue. We still have areas of the City awaiting response from utility companies, and we ask that you do not drive into town to view any of the damage. The Wildwood Boardwalk was closed last week by City Officials due to the current pandemic, and as such you can not access the area of the boardwalk damage. In an attempt to deter people from coming to view the damage and to help maintain social distancing we have released several images of the damage to the public domain for pool use by any outlet. As Pandemic Continues, Stafford Adapts Recreation Program
SEARCH THIS: One of the many groups of ‘virtual Easter eggs’ throughout Stafford Township recently as part of the recreation department’s virtual Easter egg hunt. (Courtesy of Stafford Recreation) If you’ve been out on occasion, driving within the neighborhoods of Stafford Township, you recently may have noticed colorful Easter eggs showcased through windows and on doors of some homes. It’s simply a byproduct of one of the new ways the Stafford Recreation Department has hatched to provide some fun for residents. As part of its Virtual Recreation Center, in lieu of the standard Easter egg hunt, Stafford children during the weeks leading up to Easter were encouraged to download Easter egg pictures, color them and display them in the windows and on the doors of their houses. The purpose was to provide other children in town a means of “hunting” the eggs, either when they walked around with their parents or drove through parts of town. (Courtesy of Stafford Recreation) “It’s been a big hit,” said Recreation Director Betti Anne McVey during the April 9 “Mayor’s Forum” broadcast on the town website. “Of course, we had to postpone our normal event, but we figured out a way to do it […]

NJSIAA Sets Spring Sports End Date of June 30, May Hold Sectional Tournaments
Sarah Lally and the Southern Regional softball team will be happy to get back on the field this season, but the NJSIAA recently set the spring sports season’s end date for June 30 and it may hold state sectional tournaments depending on when an exact return date occurs. (Photo by David Biggy) As Southern Regional, Barnegat and Pinelands Regional high schools began their spring breaks on April 10, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association updated its position on the spring sports season, which remained indefinitely shut down as COVID-19 continued its assault throughout the area and beyond. “The return-to-school date and related public health guidelines will continue to determine the viability of a spring sports season,” read the latest statement from the athletic governing body. “As noted, the NJSIAA is committed to doing whatever is possible to provide New Jersey’s student-athletes with some type of spring season.” Typically, this is the week many sports teams would have been competing during the morning or early afternoon as they blazed through the first quarter of their regular-season schedules, but athletes in each of the three high schools haven’t practiced since March 14. With Gov. Phil Murphy previously declaring schools off limits […]

COVID-19 Testing Limited to Three Days Next Week at OCC for Those Who Qualify
(Courtesy of Ocean County Health Dept.) As of April 9, 1,513 preregistered Ocean County residents who qualified have been tested for COVID-19 at the testing facility on the Ocean County College campus in Toms River. Additional testing is available on three days next week at the drive-through site, according to county officials. Appointments must be scheduled ahead of time and are available for Monday, April 13; Wednesday, April 15 and Friday, April 17. Ocean County Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari said additional tests were secured for county residents. “The testing has gone very smoothly and all the agencies working there have gone above and beyond to make sure those giving the tests are safe and the public receiving the tests are also protected,” he said. The facility is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting. To be tested at OCC, individuals must be an Ocean County resident and have identification; have a physician’s prescription; make an online appointment; and be symptomatic. Entrance to the testing site is from the campus’ Hooper Avenue entrance. “We are meeting the testing needs of our residents and will reduce the number of test days to three at the college,” Daniel Regenye, Ocean County […]

Morey’s Piers & Resorts sets revised opening date to Memorial Day Weekend
Morey’s Piers & Resorts hopes to be able to open for the 2020 season on Memorial Day Weekend, according to a note published on the organization’s official website. Read the full statement HERE. Mariner’s Pier was originally scheduled to open this weekend, but the COVID-19 crisis forced a tentative postponement to Mother’s Day Weekend. The fluidity of the situation has caused the date to be pushed back again. Memorial Day Weekend, generally heralded as the official start of the summer season, begins on Friday, May 22 this year. “Clearly, the level of disruption and uncertainty for all of us is extraordinary, and for Morey’s Piers, this means that our traditional phased opening schedule for each of our piers and waterparks may require adjustment this season,” reads a portion of the statement, which goes on to stress patience in this most uncertain time.

Altruism Abounds: Community Donation Efforts
Coastal Cushion donated masks to healthcare workers. (Supplied Photo) While all residents considered nonessential are urged to stay home to ensure the safety of the community, healthcare workers and first responders continue to labor tirelessly as the most vulnerable in our community face a deadly pandemic. This has inspired many who are in the position to extend a helpful service or gesture of thanks to those on the front lines. Coastal cushion mask donations. (Supplied Photo) John and Angela Thrunk of Coastal Cushion in Surf City saw the opportunity early on to donate their time, energy and supplies to make masks for healthcare workers and first responders. “Right when this all started, almost a month ago, we knew something was up,” explained Angela, who suspected masks would soon be in short supply. “And we knew how to make them. We just wanted to do our part, and we had supplies at hand to do it.” The Thrunks donated the first 200 masks to a Bergen County hospital, John Thrunk crafting masks for healthcare workers. Stranded in Distant Paradise: Snowbird Longs to Get Home
The author is witnessing acts of kindness in Islamorada, Fla., as he waits to return to New Jersey. (Courtesy of Vin Sparano) A couple of years ago, I wrote an essay about what happens when your children become your parents. My daughter Donna got on my case about my sloppy, dangerous slippers and my son Matt said I should be drinking red wine instead of martinis. I also said that I was delighted that my children were so concerned about the health of my wife and me. That hasn’t changed. Along comes the coronovirus and the world has changed! As I write this, Betty and I are stranded in Islamorada in the Florida Keys in an oceanfront condo with no safe way to get home to New Jersey, which we are anxious to do. I am sure I am not the only snowbird in this predicament. My son drove our car to the Keys for us and we flew down, planning to stay in the Keys for six weeks and then fly back. My son would drive our car home to New Jersey. When coronovirus started to spread, we booked the auto train home, but when the virus continued to […]

Equity Prime Mortgage Initiates Local ‘Goggles for Docs’ Drive for Healthcare Workers
[embedded content] By now, the general public has heard that hospitals, especially in New York and New Jersey, are running low on PPEs or personal protection equipment, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most often discussed in the news are face masks. But doctors and nurses are also in need of eye protection. That’s what prompted a group to collect their ski and snowboard goggles and send them to medical professionals on the front line of the COVID-19 response. The grassroots mission, which is now a national network that was started by skiers and snowboarders in Berkshire East, Mass., is called Goggles for Docs. And as of this week, Equity Prime Mortgage New Jersey has rallied to collect ski goggles and get them where they are needed. “Our community always rallies to help in times of crisis, and this time is no different. The biggest need for our healthcare workers is PPE, and while we are all hearing about the mask shortage, the other massive need is for eye protection. We all have ski and snowboard goggles laying around, and no one is hitting the slopes anytime soon, so let’s donate those old goggles and make a difference now,” said […]

Beloved Local ‘Doctor G’ Extends Career Practice Online Amid Pandemic
BACK ON CALL: Dr. Richard Goldstein’s career has been kickstarted at age 82, as he diagnoses patients online from isolation in his assisted-living space. (File Photo Jack Reynolds) There is a chance that if you grew up or raised a child in Southern Ocean County in the last four decades, you saw Dr. Richard Goldstein. For years, he lived in Harvey Cedars, was a favorite at Pediatric Affiliates on Route 72 in Manahawkin and raised a family on LBI. He was known for being a doctor with a social conscience who wouldn’t hesitate to spend extra time with a patient. And today, after just turning 82, “Dr. G” is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, seeing patients online and helping streamline potential cases into treatment, or help keep the pressure off hospital staffs. By 2016, Goldstein was no longer able to keep a regular practice after having a knee replacement, followed by a fractured second cervical vertebra and surgery. That was when he found telemedicine. Working for a healthcare company called Amwell, which is headquartered in Boston, he has been seeing patients online for almost four years. Following the passing of his wife, Mary Beth, Goldstein moved to Atria […]

Pine Shores Art Association Hosts an Online Portrait Exhibit
UP THERE: ‘Paul at Carmel-by-the-Sea’ by Melody Johnson Schossig. The Pine Shores Art Association has adjusted to the times by holding its annual portrait show online. Although it’s not the same as seeing the works in person, the webmaster has created a way to enlarge the pictures so they can be better appreciated, and they are all very good works. Some are more technically correct and others more creative, but all are enjoyable. The most contemporary portrait is “Paul at Carmel-by the-Sea” by Melody Johnson Schossig. Her subject, Paul, is relaxing in a tree and perhaps watching a concert or game from this vantage point. The design is fluid and appealing; you can anticipate his foot moving to the beat of an unseen band. The colors are limited and harmonious, and the choice of a flat, black background in this case adds to the appeal. THE LOOK: Rose Sinatra painted ‘Boy in Brown’ in watercolor. Carol E. Skiles’ pencil of “Uncle George” also shows dynamic movement, but in the quality of the line the artist employs. There is emotion in the expression as he seems about to comment on something or someone as he looks us in the eye. This […]

One Ram Blazed Fruitful Path to Belmont Abbey and Others Followed
Matt Maxwell (left) and Brennan Davis (right) share a celebratory moment with Liam Maxwell (center) after Liam broke the men’s volleyball career kills mark at Belmont Abbey College in January. (Photo courtesy Charles Maxwell) When Liam Maxwell arrived at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina just less than four years ago, he found a home away from home. “Everything here’s been great, and the culture is amazing. Coming here was the best decision I’ve ever made,” said Maxwell, a Southern Regional High School graduate whose collegiate volleyball career recently concluded. “I came to Belmont, N.C., and it was an environment I loved. I’ve been so blessed by being here.” Liam had loved his experience at Belmont Abbey so much he invited other Southern Regional players to visit the campus and consider playing at the NCAA Division II level. It started with close friend Brennan Davis – who had been the Rams’ setter during Liam’s sophomore, junior and senior seasons of high school – as well as former Ram Collin Lockwood, and then his cousin Matt Maxwell, who had been the setter for Southern the past three seasons before graduating last June. Former Southern Regional volleyball star Liam Maxwell started a […]

Signs of Times: Residents Express Gratitude Amid Crisis
APPRECIATION: Outside the Manahawkin post office is one of many signs that popped up in Stafford Township last week to praise workers in public service despite the COVID-19 pandemic. (Photo by David Biggy) As social distancing continued to become a larger part of life for most people in Stafford Township last week, random acts of kindness also seemed to increase. From drive-by birthday celebrations to businesses delivering meals to Southern Ocean Medical Center to families making and donating masks to medical personnel, the number of things people are doing for others is on the rise. In times of crisis – and the current COVID-19 pandemic certainly qualifies – many in town have said that’s when the community really comes together to show what it’s about. Mayor Greg Myhre has mentioned it during his “Mayor’s Forum,” and residents all over social media have echoed similar sentiments. But one particular act of kindness that gave so many a reason to smile last week came in the form of something so simple – words of thanks and appreciation for all those on the front lines of service to the community. “This made our day,” the Stafford police department posted to its Facebook page […]

Jersey Fights to Save Cranberry Business
New Jersey and its citizens have been in many battles as the underdog, among them having its name on a sports team or getting credit for designing the American flag. However, none may have been more important than the time Arthur Flemming, U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, attacked one of the state’s leading agricultural products, the cranberry, only a few weeks before Thanksgiving 1959. After a routine press conference announcing the seizure of several batches of cranberries from the states of Oregon and Washington for containing residue of a chemical that had been shown to cause cancer in rats, Flemming was asked about the safety of the rest of the country’s cranberry crop. The Asbury Park Press of Nov. 10 printed, “At a Washington news conference yesterday, Mr. Flemming suggested housewives not buy if they can’t determine where the berries came from and the year of the crop. … Mr. Flemming was backed by George P. Larrick, food and drug administrator, who said it was risky for humans to eat the tainted berries. They said rats fed doses of the weed killer (aminotriazole, used in Oregon and Washington) over a two-year period developed cancer of the thyroid.” The […]

Quaran-Teen Enjoys Socially Distanced, Drive-By Birthday
Isabella ‘Bella’ Wyckoff and her sister, Olivia. (Supplied Photo) Making the most of turning 15 during quarantine. (Supplied Photo) This month, teens restricted to the boundaries of their homes mourn the loss of their social lives, extracurricular hobbies, sports and celebrations. Isabella Wyckoff of Manahawkin, who turned 15 last week, had resigned herself to having a quiet birthday with her immediate family members. As she spent the day in her pajamas in true quarantine fashion, her grandmother Phyllis Higgins was busy organizing a surprise “drive by birthday.” Nobody, not even Wyckoff’s parents, knew about the surprise. “I wanted to celebrate her birthday, but obviously, we haven’t had any close contact since the beginning of March,” Higgins lamented. Determined, she got creative and put together what she called a “party in a box.” The ornately decorated box contained everything a birthday party calls for: balloons, horns, hats, plates and napkins for cake eating and, of course, personal gifts. Wyckoff’s grandmother Phyllis Higgins wishes her a happy birthday from a safe distance. (Supplied Photo) In addition to the party box, Higgins organized a festive procession of friends and family members to participate (from the containment of their vehicles) in the drive-by celebration. Decommissioning Continues at Oyster Creek Generating Station With Demolishing of Transformers
(Photo by Jay Mann) Nearly 2 million pounds of metal and material, the equivalent of 1½ Airbus A380 jet airplanes, has been removed for recycling from the shuttered Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station as decommissioning of the nation’s former oldest operating commercial nuclear power plant continues. Eight transformers, three office buildings and a machine shop were demolished and removed from the site, according to the latest update from Holtec International. Holtec, a Camden-based company, is the parent company of Holtec Decommissioning International, which is the licensed operator of Oyster Creek in Lacey Township. Work is expected to begin shortly on the demolition and removal of another building as well as a water storage tank. “The innovative approaches coupled with passionate and dedicated individuals at our sites and on our decommissioning teams are resulting in excellent ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) dose rates and safety performance and progress at both sites,” said Pam Cowan, senior vice president and chief operating officer for Holtec Decommissioning International. “We are approaching decommissioning in an efficient and safe manner that will set standards of excellence for the industry. Our progress serves as powerful proof that timely decommissioning creates jobs and cleans up environmental and […]

LBI Mourning Coronavirus Deaths of Three Longtime Residents
Ruth Reeder (File Photo by Jack Reynolds) Long Beach Island is a community of six separate and distinct towns on a barrier island with a seasonal population that blooms and shrinks. That singular community of full-time and part-time homeowners is in mourning this spring with the deaths of three longtime Island residents who succumbed after being exposed to coronavirus. Ruth Reeder, 96, of the Loveladies section of Long Beach Township as of last year, and Sandy Medford, 76, of Ship Bottom, were congregants at Zion Lutheran Church in Barnegat Light and attended the same birthday party there where they were exposed to the virus prior to any restrictions on public gatherings issued by Gov. Phil Murphy. Additionally, John Chiselko, 83, of Surf City, whose wife attended the same birthday party and became sick, died March 24 at Southern Ocean Medical Center, according to his obituary. He was the first confirmed COVID-19 case on LBI, a family member has said. Reeder, Medford and Chiselko are the first known COVID-19 deaths locally. Bob Reeder, one of Ruth’s two sons, said he was able to see his mother at SOMC the day before she passed away. “I don’t know if she knew me,” […]

Barnegat Cafe Offering Free Easter Dinners
(Courtesy of Delights Artisan Cafe) Due to the economic impact of COVID-19, WBNJ 91.9 FM and Delights Artisan Café in Barnegat Township will be giving away free individual ham dinners to area residents. “Everyone should have the opportunity for a traditional Easter meal,” said Bill Clanton Jr, cafe co-owner and WBNJ general manager and programming director. “This is our way to give back to our community. Individual single-person meals will include glazed spiral ham and two sides. Our goal is to serve 100 meals this Sunday, but the modest goal of 100 meals will be increased as donations increase” Clanton said the cafe is seeking donations of hams, potatoes, and vegetables. Meals will be offered free of charge while supplies last starting at 11 a.m. on Easter on a first come, first served basis. For more information about the dinners or how to make a donation, contact the cafe at 609-549-0727 or email hello@delightsnj.com. Beaches But Dead in the Water; Perfect Time to Ruin Everything
I gave it my best shot – to keep beaches open, that is. But, science and sensibility fell prey to what amounts to shutdown hysteria. The near Island-wide shutdown of “water activities” was admittedly fueled by some folks not displaying proper quarantining etiquette when beaching it. I’ll stand firm – and defeated, momentarily – by persisting that there is absolutely no science proving any infectious/communicability danger from surf fishing and waveriding in Jersey waters. Please, do not try to roundaboutly usher in recent California findings of communicability in the Golden State. That data is strictly based on dangers within some of the West Coast’s pathogenically suspect ocean areas. Hereabout, it’s downright incomprehensible to overlook thousands upon thousands of people packing into supermarkets, big box marts and liquor stores while simultaneously insinuating a small cross section of people seeking healthy outside air – by riding waves and pursing stripers – present an unacceptable COVID risk. I know I’m beating a dead beach here, but I simply want to go on the record as being among those disgusted with this beach ban syndrome. In the distant future, as generations look back and laugh their asses off at many of the current COVID-19 […]

COVID-19 Claims Bill Yoder, Longtime Surflight Supporter
Bill Yoder (Supplied Photo) Surflight Theatre has lost a valued long-time supporter to complications of COVID-19. Bill Yoder, 87, passed away on April 5. Yoder graduated from Abington High School in Abingtron, Pa. in 1952. He had started working in the field of journalism long before that, taking a job at the age of 14 at the offices of the Times Chronicle, publishers of several newspapers in Montgomery County, Pa., that state’s third largest county in terms of population located adjacent to and northwest of Philadelphia. In 1961 Yoder was employed by the Trenton-based auto racing publication Area Auto Racing News as a photographer, where he worked until his retirement. Yoder attended and photographed the Indianapolis 500 for the first time in 1960. He ended up attending and photographing the big race for 50 years in a row and the racing enthusiast and journalist was a proud life member of the Indianapolis Oldtimers Club. Another highlight of his career was being the track photographer for the very first Pocono Raceway Schaefer 500 in 1971. Among many other awards in the field of raceway journalism Yoder received the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. It is […]

Olympian, Former SRHS Star Frank Molinaro Retires from Wrestling
TURNS A PAGE: Former Southern Regional and Penn State wrestler Frank Molinaro, who placed fifth in the 2016 Olympics, has stepped away from competition. (Supplied photo) Frank Molinaro has a strong faith in God, and he’s always believed God would show him the way to go during his time as an international and Olympic wrestler, even if it meant it was time to stop pursuing personal goals and focus on others. “God always keeps everything in perspective and He’s always with me, guiding me,” said the Barnegat native and former Southern Regional and Penn State star. “And the thing I always remind myself is that if I stay focused on God, He pours into every aspect of my life. I’m excited to see what He has next for me.” After the International Olympic Committee recently announced the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games, originally scheduled for July, until next year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic – thus, rendering this past weekend’s scheduled Olympic Trials at the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State useless – Molinaro was left staring at a fork in the road. At 31, he could have continued to train and take another shot […]

Stafford School Board Meeting Schedule, District Grading Procedures Altered as Pandemic Rages
Stafford Township School District buildings are not expected to be reopened anytime soon because of the COVID-19 pandemic. (Photo by Ryan Morrill) Due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19, several important changes recently were made within the Stafford Township School District, including a date change for this month’s regular board of education meeting, according to Superintendent George Chidiac. On March 27, Business Administrator Lourdes LaGuardia posted a notice on the district website announcing the rescheduling of the regular meeting from April 23 to Thursday, April 30, the date of the annual budget hearing. The board now will conduct its regular meeting on April 30 at 7:30 p.m., and the public hearing for the budget – originally scheduled for 7 p.m. – will follow at 8 p.m. Both meetings will be streamed live on the district website. Chidiac said board members expecting to be part of the meetings will do so via Zoom, as will the board attorney. The only individuals who will be in the Oxycocus School’s Stafford Room will be Chidiac, LaGuardia, Supervisor of Technology Bill Deren and Shannon Mastrogiovanni, who typically operates the camera during video filming. “Even with board interaction, we’re doing it from a safe distance […]

Governor Closes State and County Parks
Outdoor options for quarantined state residents are continuing to diminish. During a televised press conference, Gov. Phil Murphy enhanced an executive stay-at-home order on April 7 by closing all state parks, state forests and county parks, including Barnegat Light State Park, which had been open to fishing and ambulatory usages. “I do not take this action lightly. Some of my fondest memories with my own children are beautiful spring days in parks playing soccer and enjoying our family,” Murphy said, adding, “but my focus, and my sole mission in life right now, is the health of every New Jersey family.” The shutdown came after state parks apparently became venues where people were “gathering and socializing in groups,” in violation of governor’s orders to end most get-togethers. “It wasn’t somebody throwing a Pink Floyd party,” quipped Murphy, noting, “I don’t think two weeks ago the closure was a step we’d necessarily have to take.” He then pointed out that separate county park closures put pressure on nearby state parks. Ocean County was among counties already closing its parks. On Long Beach Island, most oceanfront beaches are now closed to all but local residents bearing re-entry placards. The governor implied some further […]

Bank of America Temporarily Closes Ship Bottom Branch
The Ship Bottom branch of Bank of America has temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is still access to the branch’s ATM machines, but there is no counter or drive-through service, meaning BOA customers who have never made a deposit in an ATM – think some seniors or people who just don’t trust putting their cash or checks into a machine – will have to travel to the mainland to make a deposit or cash a check. The nearest mainland Bank of America branch is located at 785 Route 72 East, Manahawkin. It is open but does not have drive-through service so customers have to enter the building to conduct business, meaning customers, tellers and bank representatives have to meet face-to-face, not a popular option in the age of COVID-19. The other Manahawkin branch, located at 65 Nautilus Drive, is a strictly ATM affair. LBI-based BOA customers looking for a drive-through will have to travel all the way to the bank’s Mystic Island branch, located at 100 Mathistown Road in Little Egg Harbor Township. LBI residents who use the Ship Bottom branch now also can’t access their safe deposit boxes. Banks have been moving more and more toward […]

Long Beach Township Beaches Now Open Only to Property Owners With Re-entry Passes
Long Beach Township Monday closed its beaches to everyone except property owners and residents in possession of a disaster re-entry placard. These passes were distributed following Superstorm Sandy, with an updated version, valid through 2025, mailed out to replace the expired ones earlier this year. The township is the second municipality on LBI to clamp down on beach activities. Ship Bottom closed its beaches to everyone on Saturday. The township, however, has 12 miles of non-contiguous beaches, by far the most of any town on the 18-mile-long Island. The township’s action, which came in the form of an emergency order, is effective immediately. “Persons issued the placards may access the beach area of the township designated on the placards, and may do so to walk or jog, but shall not engage in any other activities on the beach,” a summary of the order reads. “Two adults, their minor children and leashed dogs may use the placard at any one time.” Fishing, swimming, surfing and any other activities are prohibited during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the emergency order. All placards must be prominently displayed and shown to any township police officer or township employee in the vicinity of a beachgoer, […]

All Ship Bottom Beaches Closed Effective Saturday Evening
(Photo by Jack Reynolds) All Ship Bottom beaches are closed as of 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4 because of the public’s refusal to adhere to Gov. Phil Murphy’s travel ban stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic that has claimed the lives of three local people in the last few weeks. “It is the last thing I wanted to do,” Mayor William Huelsenbeck said Saturday afternoon. “But the amount of people disregarding the governor’s travel ban and the amount of people on the beaches today once the sun came out is outrageous.” Beaches across the Island saw little action over the last few days because of the weather, but that changed Saturday once the gray morning faded to a sunny spring day. Next week is the beginning of spring break for some school districts and has historically been a busy week for the Island. Ship Bottom is issuing a Nixle alert to communicate the beach closures, according to the mayor. Huelsenbeck said the closure will be enforced throughout the weekend by the borough’s police department and beginning Monday the borough’s code enforcement office will also be on hand. “Right now, it’s closed to everyone,” Huelsenbeck said, noting most of the state’s other […]

Long Beach Township Mayor Warns That Beaches, Surfing May Be Shut Down for Irresponsible Behavior
Officials in Long Beach Township and the rest of Long Beach Island’s municipalities do not want to shut down beaches or surfing during the COVID-19 pandemic and state of emergency, but this may be coming if surfers and beachgoers don’t act responsibly. As of Friday morning, April 3, the parking lot adjacent to the Forsythe Refuge in Holgate will be closed due to congregating and a lack of social distancing. Island beaches are still open but will be shut down if the public doesn’t act responsibility. (Photo by LJ Hepp) “I went down to the Wooden Jetty today (Thursday) and there were 15 surfers within 30 feet of each other,” said Long Beach Township Mayor Joseph Mancini. Mancini reported a white van, occupied by three men in their 20s, blocking the entrance to the refuge. He said he told them they couldn’t be congregating and was met with a volley of explicit language. Mancini said he did not think they were locals. With many other beaches in the state closed, all of the Ocean County park system shut down and much of New Jersey laid off or working remotely, LBI is a destination for those trying to get outside. LBI locals […]

Holgate Parking Lot Closed to Vehicles Effective Immediately
(Photo by Ryan Morrill) Long Beach Township has closed the parking lot at the south end of Holgate to vehicles effective today, Thursday, April 2. It is, however, accessible to pedestrians. “It has become abundantly clear that people are not acting in accordance with the guidelines and mandates that have been enacted to address the current situation” of the COVID-19 pandemic, reads a notice signed by township Mayor Joseph Mancini and Police Chief and Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Anthony Deely. Mancini said on Thursday afternoon there were approximately 20 to 25 cars in the parking lot, many of them belonging to surfers heading into or back from the ocean, and a number of them were hanging out together in close proximity in the lot. As the mayor remarked, “The governor’s proclamation is to stay home,” except for certain necessary reasons such as a trip to the doctor or grocery store, or to get outside for a walk or run. In addition, congregating in groups is not permitted. Gov. Phil Muphy has also repeatedly asked that second homeowners stay in their primary residences rather than travel to the shore. Mancini pointed out that some coastal towns have closed their beaches, […]

Cape May County Chamber supports stay-at-home and social distancing orders
PRESS RELEASE This is an extraordinary time. As members of a community supported by tourism, we have never before made a request of this nature. Our priority is to see the coronavirus brought under control and even eradicated, businesses re-opened and our daily routines resumed as quickly as possible. The way to teach that goal while protecting the health of those in our community is to listen to the advice of the officials at the CDC and WHO, as well as our government officials, and abide by social distancing and stay-at-home orders as directed. The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce supports the position of Governor Murphy, the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the sixteen Municipalities of Cape May County in asking that second homeowners not visit their properties in Cape May County at this time. Additionally, we ask that owners of properties stop renting to out-of-county residents until the crisis is over. While painful, this “temporarily closed” status is a reality for the majority of businesses across the country. We’re all in this together, and our efforts must be coordinated to stop the spread of coronavirus.

City of Wildwood introduces 2020 municipal budget
PRESS RELEASE Wildwood, NJ – The City of Wildwood today introduced the 2020 municipal budget that calls for a 4.8 cent increase in the tax rate. For the average residential home assessed at $205,000, homeowners will see an approximate $105.00 increase in their tax bill. “Although we are not celebrating this tax increase, we believe it is the best rate that can effectively provide the services that residents expect from municipal government,” Mayor Pete Byron said. Byron noted that in light of significant increases in city obligations including contractual labor agreements, pension costs, trash and tipping fees, as well as a nearly $200,000 reduction in revenues from court fines, the increase is unavoidable. Byron said, “If it wasn’t for major cuts in other city expenses, this year’s increase would have been substantially larger than the proposed amount.” Byron pointed to the reduction of staffing positions and their related health care costs as a starting point in restructuring city operations to contain future costs and avoid annual tax rate increases. Commissioners Krista Fitzsimons and Steve Mikulski also expressed their optimism that the 2020 budget will not only meet immediate needs but will provide the framework to reach long-term financial stability. Not New to Pandemics: The Spanish Flu Visited Tuckerton in 1918
YESTERYEAR: The 1918 Spanish flu disrupted life, and Americans, like this typist, were quarantined or told to protect themeselves. (National Archives) This is not the first pandemic to hit the Little Egg Harbor/Tuckerton area. In the fall of 1918, the so called “Spanish Flu” arrived in Southern Ocean County, with Tuckerton, a bustling small town, as the epicenter. One of the reasons is the U.S. Marines had taken over the Tuckerton Wireless as a precaution during World War I, and it is generally accepted that soldiers who contracted the disease in training camps, such as Camp Dix in Pemberton, helped spread the disease. By the end of October, this H1N1 flu had killed over 675,000 Americans, according to the CDC’s historical accounts. The symptoms of the Spanish flu were almost the same as the COVID-19 virus: headache, tiredness, dry hacking cough, excessive sweating and pneumonia. Cause of death was complications from pneumonia, as no antibiotics were available to treat secondary bacterial infections. In contrast to today’s pandemic, the Spanish flu seemed to infect younger people between 20 and 40 years old. The following stories come from the archives of the 1918 Tuckerton Beacon as researched by Tuckerton historian and writer […]

Tree Cutting Ends in Bass River State Forest
STUMPED: The area around the Bass River State Forest fire tower has been cleared of tall white pines. Tree cutting around the Bass River State Forest fire tower is finished although the contractor is continuing to load the white pines on trucks. The site that Bass River Township called the gateway to the township, a forest of towering white pines, is now a slashed clearcut. The N.J. Department of Environmental Protection is proposing to leave it that way, allowing nature to slowly reclaim the site. On March 20, the DEP did a final inspection of the second phase of the cutting. The contractor, Advanced Forestry Solutions of Elmer, has completed all cutting operations and is in the final stages of removing the logs. The state paid $17,160 to have the 16.4 acres logged; the contractor has retained the logs as part of the payment. According to a DEP spokeswoman, the preparation of the logged area will be minimal. “Site preparation activities that were outlined for this project include prescribed burning, disking and drum-chopping as needed. Stump removal was not outlined as a treatment associated with this project and is not necessary because stumps will slowly decompose, returning nutrients to the […]

COVID-19 Slowing Down 2020 Census
(Photo by Jack Reynolds) The U.S. Constitution requires a census be conducted every 10 years, and one has been taken every decade since 1790. Recessions, even the Great Depression, haven’t brought the census to a halt. Neither have wars or rumors of war or natural disasters. Now, though, the U.S. Census Bureau, like the rest of the country, is facing a unique challenge. “Beginning today,” read a statement released March 18 by U.S. Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham, “in support of guidance on what we can all do to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, 2020 Census field operations will be suspended for four weeks until April 15, 2020. The Census Bureau is taking this step to help protect the health and safety of the American public, Census Bureau employees, and everyone going through the hiring process for temporary census taker positions. “During this pause in field operations, the Census Bureau will continue to evaluate all 2020 Census operations. Should any additional adjustments need to be made, the Census Bureau will communicate these changes broadly and promptly.” The Census Bureau still hopes everything will return to normal in a relatively short period of time. “In late May, census takers around […]

Virus Economic Damage to Commercial Fishing Grows Daily
DWINDLING MARKET: A crash in seafood demand from restaurants has forced the Barnegat Light fleet to cut back time at sea. (Photo by Ryan Morrill) The pulse of Viking Village’s commercial fishing industry this year will greatly depend on how long the coronavirus extends into the coming spring and summer season, local leaders say. But boats are already tied up at the docks. Viking Village Inc. Commercial Seafood Producers in Barnegat Light sells a large chunk of its catch right now to wholesalers, who last week were still buying product and freezing it, but with restaurants closed down to all but takeout and delivery, the chain is tightened. “There’s no place to sell them in the restaurants,” said scallop fleet owner Kirk Larson, whose family co-owns Viking Village with the Puskas family. Larson was speaking about metropolitan markets beyond New Jersey as well. Prices paid had also dropped. “We’re selling a few in New York markets, but not as many as we’re catching. “If it doesn’t get sold at a seafood market, it doesn’t go anywhere, because restaurants are closed. They can sell takeout, but that’s not like when restaurants are full-bore. In summer, I don’t know what’s going to […]

Bass River Board of Ed Reverses Itself and Agrees to Send Students to LEH Next School Year
Bass River Elementary School (Photo by Pat Johnson) What a difference a week makes. It’s looking more and more likely that schools throughout New Jersey and in many other parts of the country won’t be reopening until the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. But the Bass River Elementary School won’t be opening even then. In fact, it may never open again, and COVID-19 can’t be blamed. Instead the culprits are a declining enrollment, cuts in state aid and a dwindling tax base. The Bass River Board of Education, by an unanimous 5-0 vote, decided to enter a sending/receiving agreement with the Little Egg Harbor School District at an emergency meeting on the evening of March 25. That means all Bass River Elementary School students, and apparently teachers and educational aides, will be attending or working at the LEHSD’s schools starting in September. Just a week before, the board of education had rejected the sending/receiving plan by a 2-2 vote with one abstention. A tie vote meant the motion to enter the agreement failed. Meanwhile, the four people who gave public comment at the March 19 meeting all opposed the plan, or were at least skeptical and wanted it tabled. This […]

With Quarantine, Plenty More to Come; Bluefish 2020 Telling in Big Picture Way
HERE’S LOOKIN’ AT YOU …: A big burl on a little Bass River tree seems to have taken on a look/life of its own. A good and proper quarantine needs plenty of outs, literally. Be it trips out back for a breath of fresh backyard air or a lengthy trip to the outback for a walkabout – and maybe a pickerel hunt or two – staying active can activate a quarantine. And, no, this isn’t a third straight column aimed at going balls out for keeping LBI beaches open for surfing, fishing and ambulatory purposes. The Island is still allowing beaching in a safe distancing manner. Of course, as things heat up temp-wise, further decision making will also heat up. Hopefully police departments aren’t loading up on pepper spray. As to other healthful outs, I read where many folks are grabbing some fresh breaths by planting a garden like never before, harkening back to other wartimes, when “victory gardens” were grown as symbols of resilience. It beats Christmas lights. If you’re squished for space, you can go garden by planting some seeds in a window box before grabbing a beverage, pulling up a chair and staring at the soil. From […]

Seniors Increasingly Turn to Medicinal Marijuana
(Photo by Rick Mellerup) Anne Markel-Crozier, a certified social worker, and Matthew Brasette, an attorney, addressed the crowd at a recent lecture at Stockton University in Manahawkin. They were discussing the use of medical marijuana among older adults in New Jersey. They had plenty to talk about. According to data gathered from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 2015 and 2016, about 9 percent of U.S. adults between ages 50 and 64 had used marijuana in the previous year. About 3 percent of people over 65 used pot in that same time period. In 2013, that same survey showed 7 percent of Americans ages 50 to 64 used marijuana, and only 1.4 percent of people 65 years of age or older had indulged. In fact, seniors are the fastest-growing pot demographic in the country. Why? Because marijuana, or even CBD products – which are required to have less than 0.3 percent THC, the cannabinoid (out of more than 100) in marijuana that gets you high – seem to offer a number of health benefits. Marijuana is widely touted as having beneficial effects on pain, and seniors tend to have more aches and pains than younger people. And marijuana, anecdotally […]

Take Part in ALO Beach Cleanup Challenge, Social Distance Version
(Courtesy of Alliance for a Living Ocean) For those who live on Long Beach Island, a beach cleanup – alone or with household members – is currently permissible, and encouraged. “A cleanup is a great way to practice responsible social distancing, and we’d like to reward our participants for being good citizens on both counts,” said Alliance for a Living Ocean President Casey Courts Deacon. “While any time is the right time for a beach cleanup, we’ve had some northeasterly winds, rough surf and heavy rain,” she added. “This weather pattern significantly increases plastic waste washing up on our beaches, making this an ideal time to stage your own Social Distancing Beach Cleanup.” ALO asks that participants take a photo of what they’ve picked up off the beach and post it on Instagram and Facebook with the tag @alo_lbi (Instagram) and Alliance for a Living Ocean (Facebook), as well as #IKeepLBIClean. On Earth Day – April 24 – the nonprofit will choose a winner at random from all the submitted cleanups. That individual or group will receive an ALO long-sleeved shirt and Mizu Life water bottle. Every cleanup is a new entry. Deacon and her husband, Sean, pick up trash […]

COVID-19 Knocks Out Striper Shootout
Uncertain how the COVID-19 pandemic will be affecting the area in three months, the High Point (Harvey Cedars) Volunteer Fire Co. has canceled its striper shootout for Saturday, June 13. Craig Coddington, fire company lieutenant and vice president, said it was a painful decision since it is the first of two fundraisers scheduled, the second one being the Dog Day Race on Sunday, Aug. 16. “A lot of planning goes into the shootout,” said Coddington. “Around this time we’d start looking for sponsors, and with so many businesses hurting because of the pandemic, we’re not sure what kind of commitment we can get. It’s better to cancel now rather than start the process and then find we’re not able to do it.” The shootout, besides being a fishing tournament, would feature a community fish fry with live entertainment beginning late in the afternoon. “It was a great, fun-filled day,” he said. “We really hated to lose it.” Coddington said the shootout debuted in 2007. In 2013, it was canceled due to Superstorm Sandy at a time when many participants whose boats either had been lost or needed major repairs. He said no decision has been made regarding the Dog Day Race. “We had to dip into our […]
